2025 Dr. Tim Ogilvie AVC Vet Camp ready for a fun-filled summer
The Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) is ready to welcome aspiring veterinarians from across the country, and around the world, for the 2025 Dr. Tim Ogilvie AVC Vet Camp beginning July 7.
For the next five weeks, more than 240 excited campers in grades 7–12 will experience a behind-the-scenes look at the world of veterinary medicine through hands-on activities, labs, and field trips. From learning how to perform physical exams on dogs and large animals to practicing sutures on silicone suture pads, campers get a taste of what it takes to be a veterinarian at each session.
Third-year doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM) students Haley Greene and Emmy Barr are leading this year’s camp as coordinators, supported by a team of counsellors. Second-year DVM student Cassidy Park, first-year DVM student Molly Park, and UPEI pre-vet students Sammy Daling and Leah Campbell are excited to share their passion for animals and inspire the next generation of veterinary professionals.
“I was a camper eight years ago, and I remember thinking, ‘I’m going to be a camp coordinator one day,’ and now I’m here!” says Greene. “I hope this summer there’s a camper who leaves here inspired to be a student at AVC just like me.”
While every session blends fun with education, some experiences will be unforgettable, such as falconry demonstrations, a field trip to a horse farm, and lessons on how to care for exotic pets. Each activity is designed to help campers build confidence in animal care and develop a deeper appreciation for the important roles of veterinary professionals.
Returning this year is the Indigenous Vet Camp, offered in collaboration with Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey, an organization that represents the educational interests of 12 of the 13 Mi’kmaw communities in Nova Scotia’s Mi’kma’ki territory. This special week-long camp will welcome 40 Indigenous campers from across the Maritimes who will explore careers in veterinary medicine through an Indigenous lens, fostering connection, cultural relevance, and future possibilities in animal care.
