Provincial ADHD program at UPEI transitions to Health PEI

The provincial ADHD program operated by the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) transitioned to Health PEI, effective April 1, 2025.
“This milestone represents a significant advancement in the program’s journey, ensuring ongoing support and services for Islanders living with ADHD,” said Marilyn Barrett, Director of Distributed Medical Education and Family Medicine, and former director of the UPEI ADHD program.
Since its inception on July 3, 2022, with an initial grant of $1,000,000 from the Government of Prince Edward Island, the UPEI ADHD program became a beacon of hope for individuals aged 16 and older diagnosed with ADHD. The success of the program led to a renewed provincial government grant of $1,500,000 in 2023, further solidifying its impact and reach.
ADHD, a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting approximately five to seven per cent of adults, requires comprehensive and tailored support. The UPEI ADHD program was at the forefront of providing complete services that helped individuals manage their symptoms and achieve success in their lives.
While the program and its staff have transitioned to Health PEI, it will remain physically located in the Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre at UPEI until it moves to the new UPEI Faculty of Medicine and Interprofessional Education facility in 2025–26. The telephone number for the program is the same—902-620-5296—but the email address has changed to provincialadhdprogram@ihis.org. Dr. David Wong, a retired physician from Summerside, and Barrett, both of whom played key roles in the ADHD program at UPEI, are very proud of the team they assembled.
“We are very proud of the work our team has done and will continue to do under this new structure to pave the way for a brighter future for individuals with ADHD. It has been a privilege and honour to serve those living with ADHD in PEI,” said Barrett.
