Dr. Greg Naterer, Vice-President Academic and Research at the University of Prince Edward Island, received the K.Y. Lo Medal for significant engineering contributions at the international level from the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) on Friday, April 21, 2023, in Gatineau, Quebec.

After a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the EIC recently resumed its annual awards gala in person. Two installments of the gala were held on successive nights to allow presentation of the awards to the four cohorts of winners since 2020. Dr. Naterer was among the four exceptional engineers awarded EIC’s K.Y. Lo Medal in recognition of their outstanding achievements and service to the engineering profession.

“It’s an honour to receive this national award from the Engineering Institute of Canada,” said Dr. Naterer. “I’m grateful to my graduate students and colleagues who have helped and supported me in global initiatives that have been recognized through this medal.”

The senior awards of the EIC are the highest distinctions made by the Institute and are awarded to deserving members of its constituent societies. The K.Y. Lo Medal was established in 1997 to recognize and encourage Canadian contributions in the field of engineering at the world stage and also to honour Dr. K.Y. Lo, Professor Emeritus of the University of Western Ontario, for his outstanding contributions to the field of geotechnical and civil engineering.

“UPEI is not only fortunate to have Dr. Naterer as our vice-president academic and research but also as an accomplished professor in the Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering,” said Dr. Greg Keefe, interim president and vice-chancellor of UPEI. “He has been the recipient of other awards and achievements throughout his career, but the University community is especially proud of him for this significant recognition of his international leadership in the engineering profession.”

Prior to his appointment at UPEI, Dr. Naterer served as the dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland (2012–2022), where he made leadership contributions to research, education, and service at an international level. He led an international team, involving four countries and five industrial partners, to develop new clean energy technologies, particularly a copper-chlorine (Cu-Cl) cycle of thermochemical hydrogen production. Hydrogen is a clean energy carrier and a promising major solution to climate change.

Dr. Naterer has held prominent leadership roles in global engineering organizations, such as chair of the Thermophysics Technical Committee of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), and past president of the Nuclear Hydrogen Division of the International Association of Hydrogen Energy. Since 2014, he has served as the editor-in-chief of the AIAA Journal of Thermophysics and Heat Transfer.

The EIC is a not-for-profit corporation founded in 1887. Its membership is made up of engineers of various disciplines, such as mechanical, civil, geotechnical, chemical and electrical engineering, among others. The corporation’s goal is to support the recognition of excellence and advancement of engineering and engineering education in Canada.
