The following message was issued by email to UPEI employees and students on April 6, 2023.

The University and the UPEI Faculty Association received a letter from the Hon. Bloyce Thompson, Minister of Economic Growth, Tourism and Culture, late on April 5, 2023, confirming that Michelle Flaherty will assist the two parties as they enter mediated talks. Ms. Flaherty is an experienced mediator and arbitrator who assisted the parties earlier this year.

Mediation is a voluntary process in which the mediator, an impartial third party, facilitates open and respectful communication between parties. In a mediation process, the mediator assists parties in reaching a solution but does not make decisions. Therefore, only the two parties can agree on a settlement.

The University looks forward to the mediation process and an agreement that will allow students to return to class as soon as possible.

The University will continue to send updates to members of the campus community via their @upei.ca email accounts. Previous updates and information can be found on the upei.ca/labour website.
