The winners of the annual SMCS Integration Tournament are (left to right) Emilio Robles, Samuel Hurtado, Sartaj Singh, and Zeyad Awad.

The UPEI School of Mathematical and Computational Sciences (SMCS) held a “Pi Day” celebration on March 14, 2023. There was a good turnout of students and faculty for the celebration, which included pie eating, dressing up in math-related attire, math trivia, and the featured event—the annual SMCS Integration Tournament.

PI Day is celebrated annually on March 14 because the date represents the first three digits of pi: 3.14. Pi is a mathematical constant that represents the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.

In the Integration Tournament, students competed head-to-head in a single knockout contest to see who could evaluate integrals the fastest. Placing first was Emilio Robles, with Samuel Hurtado finishing second, Sartaj Singh third, and Zeyad Awad fourth. The winners shared $500 in prize money, thanks to support from AARMS (Atlantic Association for Research in the Mathematical Sciences).

The event was organized and emceed by Dr. Gordon MacDonald, with Justin Gulati and Sam Alhakeem as judges. Chris Vessey provided technical support, and Dr. David Horrocks arranged for the pies.
