Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes two student-athletes for their achievements and contributions to their respective sports. The UPEI Panther Subway Athletes of the Week for January 2–8 are Taylor Gillis (women’s hockey) and Jonah Capriotti (men’s hockey).

A business student from Summerside, PEI, Gillis came out of the break on a scoring tear as she netted three goals in two shootout wins over the weekend. In Friday's 5-4 win over Mount Allison University, the fourth-year forward scored twice, and was the lone scorer in Saturday's 2-1 win over Dalhousie University.

"Taylor had a great weekend to start the second half of the season. She finished well at the net, provided some great penalty kill minutes, and defended hard against the other team's best players. I look forward to seeing what she can do the rest of the season," said head coach Sean Fisher.

Capriotti, UPEI men’s hockey goaltender and a fourth-year science student from Mount Hope, Ontario, was essential in UPEI's two wins this past week. In Wednesday's 3-2 win against Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus, Capriotti recorded 28 saves. He followed that up with one of his best performances as a Panther, turning aside 41 shots in a 5-4 road win over the perennial powerhouse University of New Brunswick Reds.

"Jonah had another great weekend," said head coach Forbes MacPherson. "It was important for us to get off to a good start in the second half of the season and Jonah proved to be ready."
