Island author Katherine Dewar has won the PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation’s 2022 Publication of the Year for her book We'll Meet Again: Prince Edward Island Women of the Second World War, published by Island Studies Press at UPEI.

In the book, Dewar tells the story of 19 Island women who served in the Second World War. Drawn from interviews, diaries, letters, community histories and archival research, Dewar demonstrates how the on- and off-duty experiences these women had in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Canadian Army Medical Corps, the South African Military Nursing Service, and Red Cross tested their stamina, courage, and compassion.

An appendix lists over 700 women from PEI who served in the Second World War, many of whom had never left the Island before attending basic training. They welcomed their new roles and responsibilities as cooks, drivers, nurses, writers, parachute packers, and entertainers. Many made lifelong friendships, and a few found love. After their return to the province, many of them continued to serve as public health nurses, dieticians, homemakers, and volunteers, making a lasting contribution to their communities.

Copies are still available at the Bookmark in Charlottetown and will be back in stock elsewhere in late March.

Dewar is the author of three award-winning books, Those Splendid Girls, Called to Serve, and We'll Meet Again, which chronicle the lives of military women from PEI. She has been honoured by the PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation, the PEI Community Museums Association, the City of Summerside, and the Canadian Nurses Association for her contributions in recording PEI women’s history.

Congratulations, Katherine Dewar, and Island Studies Press!
