Every week, UPEI Athletics and Recreation recognizes two student-athletes for their achievements and dedication to their respective sports. This week’s UPEI Panther Subway Athletes for February 28 to March 6 are Alicia Bowering (women’s basketball) and Isaiah Ankra (men’s basketball).

In the Panthers' first two games of 2022, Bowering averaged 13.0 points on 43.5 per cent shooting with 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists. Sunday was an especially productive day for the rookie sharpshooter. In a win against St. Francis Xavier, Bowering scored 17 points (10 in the first quarter) on 7-of-11 shooting, including 3-of-4 from “beyond the arc.” Bowering is shooting three-pointers at an efficient 40.0 per cent, on 5.5 attempts per game which ranks third in the AUS.

“Alicia had her strongest weekend as a Panther to date,” said head coach Matt Gamblin. “She’s already a top shooter in the AUS but is learning the game and gaining confidence and toughness. All good signs as we head into playoffs.”

Ankra was a powerhouse in the Panthers’ line-up, averaging 11.5 points per game on 47.6 per cent shooting to go along with 3.0 assists. But it was in the defensive end where he left the biggest impact as he recorded six steals and a block over two games. In Saturday's win over Acadia, the rookie guard had four steals and spearheaded a 16-3 third-quarter run that proved to be the difference in the game.

“Isaiah was a huge spark off the bench this weekend,” said head coach Darrell Glenn. “He provided us with defensive intensity that led to critical steals throughout the course of both games.”
