The Engineers Without Borders UPEI chapter is hosting a Sustainable Future Conference on October 26. This is the first Canadian Official United Nations Local Conference of Youth to be held at UPEI.

The objective of this conference is to encourage action towards achieving a sustainable future by empowering university students and youth with knowledge from leading sustainability experts and an activity focused on tackling real-world sustainability problems through policy. The outcomes of this conference will be presented at the Global Conference of Youth from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Chile.

The conference is divided into two free sessions:

The morning session is open to the public. Keynote speaker Søren Hermansen will speak about how he helped make Samsø Island 100 per cent renewable by creating a community movement that made the island one of the greatest sustainable community examples in the world.

After lunch, the afternoon session is for youth who want to take action and create solutions to the sustainability problems we are facing, through a Climate Policy Hackathon event. Participants will be divided into groups of six and will work in solutions for real climate change-related problems.

Søren Hermansen won the Goteborg Award in 2009, as the first Danish person ever, for his work with sustainable energy on Samsø. The award is also known as the environmental version of the Nobel Prize. Hermansen is an international keynote speaker, presenting his methods and results from his work on Samsø. Since 2007, the island has been self-sufficient and carbon-neutral. Furthermore, the island supplies surplus energy to Jylland, the mainland of Denmark.
