Former faculty member Owen Sharkey passes away

Posting Date(s)
The UPEI community was saddened to hear of the passing of Owen Sharkey, former psychology faculty member at SDU and UPEI. Owen passed away on Friday, November 7 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. He was 92 years old. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Owen and his family lived in Saskatchewan before moving to PEI after the death of his father when Owen was six years old. He attended school in Morell and then attended SDU. While attending St. Dunstan’s, he had the highest aggregate academic score in the college for four years. After graduation, he entered St. Augustine’s Seminary in Toronto and was ordained a priest in 1948. After ordination, he was a family counselor in Halifax for several years, and furthered his education before taking the position of Professor of Psychology at St. Dunstan’s University, later UPEI, serving as the Head of the Psychology Department for several years before devoting his full time to teaching and research. Our sympathies are with all of his family and friends he leaves behind. At Owen's request, there will be no visitation or funeral service.
