Background: The Marina MacDonald Memorial Bursary was established at the University of Prince Edward Island in 1993 by her husband, G. Dunstan MacDonald. Marina and Dunstan had five sons; Leo (PEI), Paul (Toronto), Cameron (Vancouver), Andrew (Halifax) and Colin (PEI). Born in Souris, PEI in 1935, Marina was a kind, fun-loving person who loved the outdoors. In all areas of her life, she embodied the qualities which made her a wonderful nurse: care, hospitality, and compassion. After graduating from the Charlottetown Hospital School of Nursing in 1956, Marina worked as a staff nurse on medical units both at the Charlottetown Hospital and later at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital until 1985. Marina then became ill with cancer, was unable to continue working, and died in 1988. The Marina MacDonald Memorial Award is granted to a returning nursing student who demonstrates outstanding bedside manner coupled with a broad knowledge and skill in clinical practice as demonstrated during the clinical course, Nursing 310 (Integrated Clinical Practice). In 2017, Dunstan MacDonald made a leadership gift to endow this award.
