Description: Awarded to the student with the highest academic achievement in second-year Nursing who is taking no fewer than 24 semester-hours of credit in Fall/Winter courses, and who is not already in receipt of an award of $1,000 or more.
Background: This award was created through the Estate of Ruth Isobel Ross in March 1997. Ruth was born in Charlottetown on October 20, 1903. She taught school for many years before graduating from the Royal Victoria Hospital of Nursing in Montreal in 1928. She began her nursing career in Montreal and Bermuda before returning to practice in PEI. She served with the provincial Department of Health as a public health nurse across the province. During World War II, she was Commandant of the Summerside detachment of the Canadian Red Cross Corps and was also a public health lecturer at Prince of Wale s College. Ruth went on to complete specialized training at the University of Toronto, the University of Southern California, the Massachusetts Department of Health and the John Tracy Clinic in California. Ruth was dedicated to life-long learning and to the welfare of anyone with problems or needs. She passed away suddenly on February 2, 1996.
