Description: Awarded to a student entering the the four year Nursing Program. Preference given to an individual who has returned to school as a mature student after spending time in the work force and/or as a care giver; based on financial need.
Background: This annual scholarship was established by Don and Marion MacKenzie in December 2010. Native Prince Edward Islanders, Donald and Marion MacKenzie are both known for their dedication to community and family. Don, a graduate of Prince of Wales College, continued on to McGill University before the lure of farming brought him back to Prince Edward Island, where, in 1952, he became a partner in H. B. Willis, Inc. Marion, a licensed teacher, spent many years educating children in rural communities and taking advantage of continuing education opportunities at UPEI. Dr. MacKenzie was conferred with an honorary Doctor of Laws Degree by the University of Prince Edward Island in May 2010. Given their background and history of supporting their community, it is not unexpected that Dr. and Mrs. MacKenzie wish to establish a scholarship in nursing at UPEI that offers support to individuals in greatest need.
