Background: These annual awards and scholarships were established by Dr. Margaret F. Munro. Dr. Munro was central to the creation of the UPEI School of Nursing beginning in 1990 when she was seconded from the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Calgary to develop the nursing program at the University of Prince Edward Island. In 1991, Dr. Munro was invited to become the Founding Dean of the new UPEI School of Nursing and remained in that position until July 1997 when she retired. The curricul um of this school was the first in Canada to be developed based directly on the principles of primary health care. From its inception in 1992, the UPEI School of Nursing has maintained the goal of preparing graduates to practice nursing from those principles and also to give leadership in primary health care through their own professional nursing practice. In 2000, Dr. Munro published the book Forward in Faith: Establishing the School of Nursing at the University of Prince Edward Island telling the story of the School's beginnings. In 2011, the UPEI School of Nursing welcomed its first cohort of Master of Nursing students. Dr. Munro supports the UPEI School of Nursing in many ways. She provides for student awards and scholarships and offers guidance on program delivery and teaches. She has also participated as a community member in the health assessment component of the Nursing Program. Dr. Munro established six awards for nursing students at UPEI, som of which were supported through endowments and others through annual gifts. In 2016, Dr. Munro made a very generous decision to fully endow all of her six awards at UPEI.
