Description: Awarded at the end of the third year to a student in Nursing who demonstrates a particular clinical competence in working with the elderly.
Background: The Judith Smitheram Doherty Scholarship was established at the University of Prince Edward Island in 1994 in the memory of a young woman who grew up with a steadfast determination to become a nurse. As one suffering from a celiac condition all her life, Judith understood the meaning of illness and wanted to bring hope and relief to others. She became a practicing nurse in Hamilton following graduation from the School of Nursing in Timmins, Ontario (1966). After a few years in pediatrics, she found her true niche in caring for the elderly. This was fitting since it was to her grandfather that she had declared (at age of five) that she would become a nurse and Atake care of him forever. After twenty-two years of nursing, she retired early in failing health and died at the age of forty-nine in 1992. Awarded at Deans Honours Night, the Judith Smitheram Doherty Scholarship will be given to a student at the end of 3rd year of the Nursing program who demonstrates commitment, dedication, and desire to pursue a Nursing career as well as a particular clinical competence in working with the elderly, much like Judith herself displayed.
