Background: The Native Council of PEI provides representation to all Status, non-Status, Inuit, and Metis peoples living off-reserve across ancestral Mi'kmaq territory on Epekwitk (PEI). This scholarship was created by a community resolution passed on November 6, 2022, with the intent of supporting Indigenous students to pursue post-secondary education in the new IKERAS Faculty at UPEI. This Faculty was created in response to a speech given by Native Council President & Chief, Lisa Cooper, that highlighted the need for UPEI to educate all students on the history and role of Indigenous peoples in Canada. The Native Council supports and applauds all initiatives towards achieving truth and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.
