Description: Granted annually to both a second-year and a third-year nursing student. Financial need, compassion, and interests outside of nursing are criteria.
Background: Ann Muriel Andrews was born in Kenora, Ontario, and moved in Moosonee as a young child. In 1960, Ann graduated from the St. Boniface Hospital School of Nursing, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Ann specialized as an Operating Room Nurse and worked in Montreal. In the late 1960's, she moved to PEI to raise a family and to continue in her role as an OR nurse at the Prince Edward Island Hospital. After an over 10-year break from nursing, to raise her family, Ann studied very hard to recertify as an RN. She began working again, this time at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Her nursing career continued over the next 30 plus years in a variety of roles including instructional work at both UPEI and Holland College. She last worked in 2020 at the age of 80. Ann also volunteered her time and her skills on mission trips to Kenya (Mikinduri Children of Hope) and to Haiti. For many years, she spent part of her Sundays playing the organ for residents of the Atlantic Baptist Nursing Home. Ann was very active in life and had many interests outside of nursing, including music, baking, sports, sewing, swimming, church and travelling. Her sense of adventure took her across North America, Europe, and Africa. This scholarship was created to honour Ann by Kevin & Susan Andrews and family.
