Description: Presented annually to a member of a UPEI varsity team who demonstrates outstanding preparation, work ethic, and teamwork; preference will be given to a member of the Women?s Basketball team.
Background: Dave 'Hermie' MacNeill is a well-respected member of UPEI?s extended family and has always had the best interests of the students at heart. MacNeill coached the UPEI Panthers women's basketball team from 1978 to 1993 and from 1990 to 1991, is a former executive director of Sport P.E.I. and was the chief executive officer of operations for the 2009 Canada Games. MacNeill coached the Panthers to the national final in 1988-89 and was inducted into the UPEI Sports Hall of Fame in 2003. As Darren Peters once stated: Dave 'Hermie' MacNeill is one of the most highly respected citizens of Prince Edward Island who has done nothing but give his heart and soul to athletics and to young people of Prince Edward Island. This award has been created by the current Director of Athletics, Chris Huggan, who looks up to Hermie as a mentor and an example of what he strives to be as UPEI?s head Panther.
