Acknowledging that UPEI is located on the unceded land of the Mi’kmaq Nation of the Wabanaki Confederacy in the traditional district of Epekwitk, the School of Climate Change and Adaptation (SCCA) at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) invites applications for two (2) 10-month term contract positions at the rank of Assistant Professor.

As a term contract appointment, the primary responsibility of the successful candidates will be to teach the SCCA curriculum at the undergraduate level, and possibly the graduate level, and to provide other teaching support as needed. The successful candidates are encouraged to engage in research and scholarly work. The candidates are also encouraged to contribute to ongoing curriculum development and other service-related activities which contribute to the governance and functioning of both the School and the University. The successful candidate will also demonstrate a commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) and Reconciliation and Indigenization.

About our Program

UPEI is a small and dynamic university with a strong commitment to teaching and research excellence. The SCCA is governed by the Faculty of Science, UPEI (https://www.upei.ca/school-of-climate-change-and-adaptation). The SCCA is offering Canada’s first of its kind Bachelor of Science (BSc) program in Applied Climate Change and Adaptation. The SCCA is located at the Canadian Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation (CCCCA) in St Peters Bay, PEI. The CCCCA is a 45,000 square-foot research facility and will be a world-leading teaching and research center for climate change impacts and its mitigation and adaptation strategies. The lands and communities surrounding the CCCCA will serve as a living laboratory that allows for unlimited access to nearby wetlands, forests, agriculture, society, and coastal habitats directly affected by climate change.

Application Instructions:

The position will begin on August 1, 2022 or by arrangement. The successful candidate must have an earned doctoral degree in a climate-related field (e.g., atmospheric science, environmental science, environmental/civil engineering, hydrology, coastal science, geography, or related disciplines), and demonstrated experience in applied climate change research. The successful candidate must have demonstrated research and/or teaching experience in the field of climate change. Research experience gained through Tri-council funding, collaborative work with industry, commercialization, and intellectual property activities, will be considered an asset.

Successful candidates will be expected to teach five (5) three credit ACC courses (or equivalent) for the BSc program in Applied Climate Change and Adaptation. Years 1 and 2 of the program will be delivered at the UPEI Main campus located in Charlottetown, while Years 3 and 4 of the programs will be delivered at the CCCCA in St. Peters Bay, PEI.

Candidates must submit to the individual listed below,

  1. A cover letter citing the competition number listed above (please indicate which ACC courses you can teach), a full curriculum vitae, and a list of three (3) referees including an email address for each.
  2. A statement outlining the candidate’s overall teaching philosophy.
  3. A statement of their existing research and scholarly work experience as it relates to climate change mitigation and adaptation and how they plan to engage in research during the term contract.
  4. A one-page statement on how the candidate will implement the principles of EDI and Reconciliation in their teaching, research and scholarly work, and other activities.

Appointments will be at the Assistant Professor rank with step and salary commensurate with credentials and experience. Term contract faculty receive a comprehensive fringe benefits package including group life, accidental death and dismemberment, supplemental health, travel insurance, RRSP, and long-term disability insurance. This appointment is subject to final budgetary approval.
