Write the CanTEST Placement Test

New students who are required to upgrade their English language skills are required to participate in the EAP (English Academic Preparation) program.

Before you begin: 

CanTEST writing sessions are held every Wednesday morning. It is free of charge. The schedule is subject to change, so please check with the International Relations Office. The test takes about 2 1/2 hours to complete. There is no special preparation required. Please bring a pen or pencil.

Steps To Follow: 
Step 1

Contact the English Academic Preparation (EAP) program to schedule a CanTEST writing.

Step 2

Appear at least 10 minutes before you write the test, on the day of your appointment, to register.

After you complete these steps: 

CanTEST scores will be emailed to test takers within 48 hours. For UPEI applicants, scores are sent to the UPEI Registrar’s Office.

Fine Print: 

The UPEI CanTEST is used as a placement test only and accepted by UPEI and Holland College for admission. It is not the official CanTEST offered by the University of Ottawa. The results are generally not recognized by other Canadian universities. Photo ID is required by all test takers. Please bring photo ID on the day of the test. Please arrive on the day of the test at 8:50am for registration. Individuals can take the CanTEST every 3 months and results are valid for 2 years. EAP students are automatically registered in EAP courses using CanTEST scores. The UPEI CanTEST consists of 4 sections:

  • (1) Listening Comprehension - 30 minutes
  • (2) Reading Comprehension - 50 minutes  (Both are multiple choice type questions.)
  • (3) 1-page Writing sample on a general topic - 60 minutes
  • (4) Oral Interview (for new students only) - 10 minutes

Special accommodations can be made for employers interested in group assessment of employees.
