University Terms

Familiarity with these common terms and definitions can help students make a successful transition from high school to university. 

  • Academic Advisor: A faculty member, within the department where you have chosen to major, to whom you can ask questions and seek advice
  • Convocation: Graduation.
  • Campus Login: Accessed through the UPEI website with a UPEI ID # and pin. Gives the user access to information such as tuition, T2202A forms, grades, courses, registration information, exam schedules, and degree audit report.
  • Dean or Chair: Head of the department
  • Google Docs: Accessed through icon at your UPEI gmail account. Can create and share documents and presentations. Shared users can view and edit the information.
  • Grade Point Average (GPA): Grade Point is a method of expressing a student’s academic performance, where each letter grade has an equivalent numerical grade. The scale at UPEI is from 0 (F) to 4.3 (A+).  A student must maintain a minimum of a 1.7 average to stay in good academic standing.
  • Moodle: Accessed with a UPEI username and password. Professors and instructors post course information and may use it as a method of communication or interaction.
  • OWeek: Also known as Orientation Week. A week of orientation activities, social and academic, during the week before classes begin.
  • Registrar’s Office: Processes registration requests, keeps a permanent record of your grades, supplies transcripts, answers questions about registration, transcripts, degree audits, prerequisites, convocation, important dates, courses, exam scheduling, etc.
  • Student Lounges: each department has a room designated for students to use at thei leisure
  • Tuition & Fees:  the money you pay to take courses, as well as for services such as health & dental insurance, student union, athletics, technology, library, and others, depending on your program.
  • UPEI Student Union: a non-profit, democratic student representation group that provides leadership, activities, and support for all UPEI students.
