At the End of Your Rope: Unravelling Your Role in Conflict Resolution

Have you ever wondered how conflicts can escalate when we’re trying to make them go away? Do you sometimes wonder why your genuine attempts to do a good job and work well with others sometimes fail? Are you helping the situation or inadvertently causing the conflict to escalate or fester? Are there just some people that are impossible to work with?

Many of us who have worked within teams have experienced the impact that conflict can have on the workplace. Left unchecked, it can create a very unpleasant working environment which can have negative effects on production and quality of work. In the worst cases, it can result in malicious office gossip, increased sick leave or members permanently leaving the team.

Conflict resolution skills are seen increasingly as desired attributes of a well rounded team member. Being aware of your contribution to conflict, good and bad, is an essential step towards developing truly useful skills in team problem solving.

During this 3-day course, participants will use “low”* elements of an outdoor 25 acre, wheelchair accessible ROPES Course, developed by the Adventure Group and nestled in a forest minutes from UPEI, to explore the role they each play in problem solving and group conflict.

At the End of Your Rope is a very participatory, hands-on learning experience which uses adventure-based methodology to assist participants to “learn by doing ”. Course facilitators will lead participants through group and individual exercises and challenges designed to assist them to understand their roles within a team, and the ways in which their attitudes and behaviors contribute to the team’s success which, when transferred back to the workplace or other team setting, will promote healthier relationships and problem solving.

Participants will leave this 3-day course with an enhanced understanding of their own personal reaction to group conflict and problem solving, a solid grounding in what is necessary to overcome personal and group challenges with conflict and a feeling of increased confidence that they know what to do when they find themselves at the end of their ropes.
