| Description: | awarded to an undergraduate student in any year of study, any faculty who has declared financial need. The recipient will be a Canadian citizen who has been successful in his/her studies and has also been active in work/entrepreneurial activities and community service or volunteerism. |
| Background: | Lou MacEachern was born in Hazel Grove, PEI. He and his wife, Hilda, live in Calgary. They have three children. A well-known Calgary businessman Mr. MacEachern understands more than most the value that education can play. He has had a very successful career and has been very generous to students pursuing education at every level. He realized the necessity of education after he moved to Calgary for the first time in 1952. He grew up in PEI and at a time when boys were expected to work on family farms and he quit school in Grade 7 to work. Ambition led Mr. MacEachern to Calgary where he got a job with a retail carpet company. Four years later, Mr. MacEachern decided his best investment would be in a good education. He returned to PEI and enrolled in Grade 8 and continued studies at St. Dunstan's University and Prince of Wales College, UPEI predecessor institutions, and supported himself with cleaning jobs. He went on to Dalhousie University studying in the field of commerce. When he returned to Calgary in 1964 started his own cleaning company - Servpro. Today, Louis W. MacEachern is president and owner of Fortune Industries Ltd. the major shareholder in the Servpro/Dalco Group of companies, with businesses in Calgary, Alberta, until the sale of that group in 1999. His community and professional affiliations are as: Member of the Management Advisory Council, Faculty of Management, University of Calgary; Member, Board of Governors of the University of Prince Edward Island; Council Member, The Duke of Edinburgh's Awards; Honorary Chairman, William Booth Socie ty; Co-Chairman, Advisory Board to the Salvation Army; Member, Rotary Club of Calgary (former director); Director, Calgary HandiBus Association; Supporter, the Alberta Mentor Foundation for Youth. He is the leading supporter of the Friends of UPEI - Calgary Fund at the Calgary Foundation that assists students from Alberta and PEI attend UPEI. One of these scholarships is named in honour of Lou MacEachern. In the past, he has served with The Calgary Foundation, the Naval Museum of Alberta Society, the Pinnacle Awards, and he has been recognized as an honorary lieutenant-colonel of 14th Calgary Service Battalion. In 2006, he was presented with the Outstanding Lifetime Philanthropist Award by the Association of Fundraising Professional Calgary Area Chapter. In business, he is involved with the following publicly traded companies: Director, BrazAlta Resources Corp.; Director, Central Alberta Well Services Corp.; Director, Mundoro Mining Inc. In addition, Mr. MacEachern has a significant art collection including works by PEI artists. While some artwork is on the walls of corporate offices, his big heart is more inclined to loan pieces at no cost to hospitals and charities. Currently, some 500 of his paintings are appreciated by staff, enjoyed by patients, and provide exposure for the artist. |
