Wireless Network Service

PANTHERNET is a free service that provides wireless access to the internet while on campus. This allows web surfing at high-speeds from most locations without plugging in network cables. PANTHERNET-OPEN and eduroam networks are also available. See below for a description of the difference.

PANTHERNET

PANTHERNET provides encrypted (secure) wireless access on campus. PANTHERNET is available to students, faculty and staff in all academic buildings. Most wireless devices should be compatable with the PANTHERNET network, however, you may need to download and run a configuration file, or otherwise manually configure your device in order to connect to PANTHERNET. The network will authenticate users before access is allowed, so you must have a working network username and password in order to connect.  Once you have connected to PANTHERNET your device should automatically reconnect whenever you are on campus. Your access to UPEI's PANTHERNET service is governed by our Acceptable Use Policy for University Computer Resources.

PANTHERNET-OPEN

PANTHERNET-OPEN provides unencrypted (unsecured) wireless access on campus.  PANTHERNET-OPEN does not require any configuration of your wireless device in order to connect.  After connecting to PANTHERNET-OPEN, open your web browser and try to load any web site. You will be automatically redirected to a login page for PANTHERNET-OPEN. Enter your network username and password in order to connect.  PANTHERNET-OPEN has a session limit of a few hours, so you may be prompted to login to PANTHERNET-OPEN periodically. Your access to UPEI's PANTHERNET-OPEN service is governed by our Acceptable Use Policy for University Computer Resources.

eduroam

eduroam (EDUcation ROAMing) is a wireless network service that allows students, staff, and faculty to securely access the Internet while visiting other member sites. Users provide credentials (e.g. username and password) from their home institution and they are granted access.  For UPEI users, your username is in the form of "username@upei.ca" along with your password. All faculty, staff, and students of UPEI can use the eduroam network at all institutions that support eduroam.  You can learn more about eduroam here.

Acceptable use of the eduroam network is determined and governed by the hosting university. Your access to UPEI's eduroam service is governed by our Acceptable Use Policy for University Computer Resources.
