In last week's round of Microsoft updates, a bad one slipped through and is causing a bit of trouble on campus.
To determine if you have been affected, look for the Kaspersky anti-virus icon in the Windows Notification area - that's the part of the Windows Taskbar, all the way to the right. If the Kasperky "K" is greyed out rather than a bright red, you are affected by the bad Windows update.
Another symptom is that every time you start you computer, it wants to run the "chkdsk" process to clear up disk errors, before Windows even starts.
If either of these symptoms appear on your computer, please notify the Help Desk and someone will be dispatched to correct the problem. This involves uninstalling the update and doing a bit of cleanup work.
The Help Desk can be reached at helpdesk@upei.ca, or by calling 566-0465.
