Prince Edward Island writers are invited to submit an Expression of Interest for this year’s Writers Exchange with Tasmania. The successful applicant will be offered a three-week residency in Hobart this September. Writers must have: • a high calibre of published work in any genre(s); • a background in teaching creative writing; • public speaking skills; and • the ability to travel to Tasmania in September, 2015. Applicants must submit: • a completed Expression of Interest; • a sample of their work; and • the names and contact details of two referees. Email applications must be received by 28 February, 2015 and sent to: director@tasmanianwriters.org. The successful applicant will be contacted in mid-March. Dr. Johanna Wolf, Associate Professor for the School of Environment and Sustainability at Royal Roads University, British Columbia, is a candidate for UPEI's new Canada Research Chair in Sustainability, Resilience, and Island Contexts. Dr. Wolf will make two presentations, both of which will be open to the campus and research communities. These presentations, original scheduled for February 9 and 10, have been postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date. The Island Peace Committee and CUPE Global Justice are excited to announce their partnership with Cinema Politica Charlottetown to bring the First Annual Social Justice Film Festival. From February 13 to 15, the festival will bring together award winning films on a broad array of social justice topics tying into the festival’s overarching theme of ‘Peace and Prosperity, NOT War and Austerity’. The public is invited to the First Annual Social Justice Film Festival will be held at UPEI’s Don and Marion McDougall Hall, room 242. Following the films, there will be brief discussions led by community leaders, groups and organizations. There will be door prizes and popcorn available. Admission to the festival is by donation. The "UPEI Students Make a Difference," Brown Bag Lunch Series session, featuring Jayoda Tennekone and Rhyanne Beatty, will take place tomorrow Tuesday, February 10 at 11:30 am in the PIT, Robertson Library. This presentation has been rescheduled from Tuesday, February 3. Jayoda Tennekone's presentation is titled "Improving International Relations in Your Own Community: Learning From the Diverse People Around you," and will be followed by Rhyanne Beatty's presentation titled “How to make a difference through the study of languages.” Light refreshments will be provided and a door prize will be given out to one lucky attendee!

A new website has been developed to assist entrance students in finding the award opportunities that are available to them. All incoming students from high school who apply by March 1 are automatically considered for academic based scholarships, and there are also a number of awards that require students to submit additional application material. These awards can be based on such criteria as program of study; leadership, extra-curricular, athletic or community activities, or also financial need. The new Entrance Award Cycle website, found at http://www.upei.ca/studentlife/entrance-award-cycle, enables students to clearly identify the awards that require separate application, most with a deadline of March 1. Dr. Ian Pottie, Chemistry Department, Mount Saint Vincent University will present a seminar on Wednesday, February 11 at 12:30 pm. Dr. Pottie’s presentation is entitled “Expanding the synthetic methodologies of the nitro group; could it lead to a new chemical entity to diagnose Alzheimer's disease?" The seminar will be held in the Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre, Lecture Theatre Room 212.

Grant Curtis from AVC's Biomedical Sciences will defend his Master of Arts in Island Studies (MAIS) thesis Friday, February 13, from 1:30-3:30 pm in AVC Lecture Theatre B. Grant's presentation is entitled Stepping Stones to the New World: Islandness and Migration from Southeastern Ireland to Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, and the Miramichi of New Brunswick, 1700-1850. Grant's supervisors are Dr. Ed MacDonald and Dr. James Moran, from the Department of History. Everyone is welcome to attend.

She will go over the basics of unhealthy and abusive relationships, as well as the characteristics of healthy relationships. She will also provide information on what you can do to support your friends, family, and people in your community who are affected by violence. This event is open to all UPEI students, staff and faculty. It is supported by the Department of Applied Human Sciences, and will take place from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm in Health Sciences Building, room 105. Refreshments will be served compliments of the Premier's Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention.

The campaign goal is $6,000. The Canadian Red Cross will host the final presentation titled "Restoring Family Links" in the Brown Bag Lunch Series on Friday, February 6 at 11:30 am in the Faculty Lounge, SDU Main Building. The Canadian Red Cross Restoring Family Links program helps people in Canada re-establish contact with immediate family members after separation due to armed conflict, natural disaster, migration and other humanitarian crises.
