UPEI students Jayoda Tennekone, and Rhyanne Beatty will host the second set of presentations in the Brown Bag Lunch Series, on Tuesday, February 3 at 11:30 am in the Faculty Lounge, SDU Main Building. Jayoda Tennekone's presentation is titled "Improving International Relations in Your Own Community: Learning From the Diverse People Around you," and will be followed by Rhyanne Beatty's presentation titled “How to make a difference through the study of languages.” Light refreshments will be provided, and a door prize will be given out to one lucky attendee! The Department of Pathology and Microbiology has two candidates for Adjunct Graduate Faculty who will be presenting on Friday, January 30, 2015 at 10:30 and 11:15 am in room 287N, AVC McCain Learning Commons. The first candidate is Huimin Xu, Research Scientist, with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. His seminar is titled "Regulatory Testing of Potato Viruses - Situation Today and Future Development." His seminar will start at 10:30 am. The second candidate is Tiago Hori, Post Doctoral Fellow, with the Center for Aquaculture Technologies Canada. His seminar is titled "Bioinformatics: Powering Discovery From Genomics Data" and will follow at 11:15 am. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Research on Tap returns for its sixth season of public discussion, debate, and ideas presented by researchers from the University of Prince Edward Island. Join our next conversation on Monday, February 2 at 7 pm at the Haviland Club in Charlottetown. Dr. John McIntyre, an associate professor in the department of English, will lead a discussion entitled: "Beyond Flanders Fields: Representing the Great War in Literature and Culture." The 2014/2015 season of Research on Tap is presented in cooperation with the Royal Society of Canada (RSC), Atlantic Chapter. The RSC is Canada’s national academy and is the senior national body of distinguished scholars, artists, and scientists. Research on Tap meets the first Monday of every month from October to April. Free aerobic fitness tests will be offered on the afternoons of February 10 (2:30-4:00pm) and February 13 (1:30-3:00pm). The tests will be overseen by students in KINE 343 (under the supervision of a Certified Exercise Physiologist) and will involve walking or riding a bike at sub-maximal intensities (50-85% of max effort). Volunteers will be provided with the results on their aerobic fitness at the end of the test. Anyone interested in participating should contact Travis Saunders (trsaunders@upei.ca) to sign up.

Dr. Megan MacLellan will interview for the open, tenure-track faculty position in radiology & diagnostic imaging in the Department of Companion Animals at the Atlantic Veterinary College. Dr. MacLellan graduated from AVC in 2011; completed an internship at Tufts Veterinary Emergency & Treatment Specialists and is now completing a Medical Imaging Residency program at the University of Minnesota. As part of the interview process, Dr. MacLellan has been asked to present a 50-minute lecture suitable for 3rd year DVM students on Friday, January 30 at 12:30 pm in AVC, Lecture Theatre A. Join Dr. Carolyn Peach Brown and Dr. Donald Wagner for the first set of presentations in the series, on Monday, February 2 at 11:30 am in the Faculty Lounge, SDU Main Building. Dr. Peach Brown’s presentation is titled “Forests, People and Development in Cameroon,” and will discuss the role of local institutions and community forest management in the Congo Basin forest of Cameroon. Dr. Wagner’s presentation is titled “Microfinance in Uganda and South Africa,” and will explore how microfinance is used as an economic development tool in Uganda and South Africa. The presentation will look both at some of the successes and challenges. Light refreshments will be provided, and a door prize will be given out to one lucky attendee!

Novelist Craig Davidson is three people. As Davidson, he is the author of “Cataract City”, a successful literary novel, and Rust and Bone, made into a film that premiered at the Cannes Festival. As Nick Cutter and Patrick Lestweka, he’s a popular horror writer praised by Stephen King and Clive Barker. Davidson will read from his fiction on Thursday, February 12, at 7:30 pm in Confederation Centre Art Gallery. His reading is sponsored by the UPEI English Department, with support from The Canada Council for the Arts. A book signing will follow.
