“In the Eye of the Storm: Pipelines and the National Energy Board” that was scheduled to be presented today, February 3, by the Chair and CEO of the National Energy Board (NEB) of Canada, Peter Watson, has been cancelled and will be rescheduled at a later date.

Due to the storm closure, the International Coffee House originally set for Tuesday evening as part of UPEI's International Development Week has been rescheduled to Wednesday, February 4 in combination with Games and Karaoke Night. Both events will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Campus Life Lounge in the W.A. Murphy Student Centre (second floor, above the UPEI Bookstore).

The UPEI Charity Club invites the campus community to the showing of “Ryan’s Well” on Wednesday, February 4 from 2:00–3:30 pm in K.C. Irving Chemistry Centre, room 104, in celebration of UPEI's International Development Week. "Ryan's Well" is an inspirational story about a boy who was determined to make a difference in the lives of the people living Angolo, Uganda. Through Ryan Hreljac’s fundraising efforts, thousands of dollars were raised to build a well for the village. This documentary follows Ryan’s story from his first conversations with his Ugandan pen pal to the day he visited Angoloand saw the well for the first time. Refreshments will be provided! Dr. Anja Vogt, National Research Council Charlottetown, will present a seminar on Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at 12:30 pm. Dr. Vogt’s presentation is entitled “Analysis of Natural Products: from the Mountains to the Oceans". The seminar will be held in the Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre, Lecture Theatre, Room 212.

"Could 'Infusing' University Writing with Narrative Medicine Practices Promote Public Health?" Dr. Wendy Shilton Wednesday, February 11, 2015, 7 pm Main Building Faculty Lounge, UPEI This talk explores the burgeoning multi-disciplinary field of Narrative Medicine (NM) and asks whether it could be effectively applied in university writing courses to strengthen public health benefits. Among the topics examined are the origins of NM within the medical humanities; what is meant by “narrative” in NM; how NM connects the Arts, Humanities, and Sciences; and, ultimately, what NM has to do with undergraduate critical literacy practices that potentially could be integrated across the curriculum to promote greater quality and equality in health and health care for all.

Drs. Derek Price and Raphael Vanderstichel will give a short presentation with a live demo on a freely available and easy to use web application framework for R (statistical language), on Wednesday February 4, 10:30-11:15 am in AVC - 280N (glass common room). If you have data you want to share with others, you can easily make simple interactive graphs and maps for users to explore online. Some very basic knowledge of R is required to run the application, but even if you are not comfortable with R, this application makes it accessible. You'll be producing interactive graphs/maps online in no time! Everyone is invited to join us first for coffee and treats (hosted by the Centre for Veterinary Epidemiolgical Research - CVER) starting at 10:00 in room 343N.

The meeting of the Local Users Group (LUG) of the Atlantic Computational Excellence Network (ACEnet) which was originally scheduled for January 29th has been postponed to February 12th at 11:30am in DSC 202 (the ACEnet videoconferencing room). UPEI, with support from ACOA and the Province of Prince Edward Island, recently acquired a Zeiss 710 confocal laser scanning microscope. This equipment, which optically dissects and reconstructs samples in 3D, has become a valuable tool for many types of research and is essential to maintain a competitive edge in the research community. The broad range of applications available to laser scanning confocal microscopy include a wide variety of compositional and morphological studies of most cells and tissues as well as certain inanimate materials. In the coming months, a public presentation and demonstrations of the confocal laser scanning microscope will be made available to university researchers and industry partners who collaborate with UPEI investigators. If this type of microscopy would be valuable to your research, or you wish to arrange for individual or small group demonstrations of the microscope's capabilities, please contact Dr. Andrew Tasker at tasker@upei.ca.
