UPEI Panthers "Night at the Track"

UPEI’s Department of Athletics and Recreation staff, coaches, and players are gearing up for an exciting 2015-2016 varsity schedule. Help kick off the season by attending "UPEI Panthers NIght at the Track" on Thursday, September 17 from 5:00-7:00 pm at Red Shores Race Track and Casino.

This is a great opportunity to meet and greet players and coaches, hear about the vision of the department and varsity teams, and enjoy a reception. At 7:00 pm, the attention will move to the track where 16 student-athlete ambassadors will represent each the horses participating in the first two race cards of the night.

Parking notice
Please be advised that parking permits for UPEI have sold out. The parking kiosk is now closed and any inquiries should be addressed to the Parking Office located at Security Services in the Central Utility Building. You may also contact Katherine at 902-394-6852 or parking@upei.ca. Temporary daily parking permits can be purchased at the Accounting Office in the Kelley Building. The CARI Complex may have some availability in their parking lot. Please visit CARI front desk to find out. Have a terrific school year!
 

It's not too late to register for the North Atlantic Forum!

There's still time to register for the 10th North Atlantic Forum, Building Community Resilience, hosted by the Institute of Island Studies, September 16-19, in Summerside. The program includes close to 70 presentations by researchers and community members from across Canada and around the world looking at how rural communities use their local resources to build healthy and resilient communities. The conference kicks off with a free public event Wednesday, September 16, at 7:30 pm, at Summerside’s Harbourfront Theatre. A “fireside chat” with Dr. Kelly Vodden and Dr. Sally Shortall focuses on the effects of globalization on rural communities. The formal part of the evening concludes with the launch of a book stemming from the North Atlantic Forum 2011, held in St. John’s: Place Peripheral: Place-based Development in Rural, Island, and Remote Regions (ISER Books, Memorial University), as well as a special journal issue of the Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism, arising from the North Atlantic Forum 2013, held in Holar, Iceland.

Request for Volunteer Clients for Foods and Nutrition 483
Dr. Debbie MacLellan is seeking volunteer 'clients' for a student assignment in Foods and Nutrition 483 (Professional Practice in Dietetics). This assignment involves three to four meetings with a student in the dietetics program at UPEI. The purpose of this assignment is to help students develop the skills needed to be effective nutrition counsellors. The student will assess your diet and work with you to develop some nutrition-related goals to help you improve your overall health. If you are interested and want to learn more about what you will be asked to do as a volunteer client, please contact Debbie at maclellan@upei.ca.
Submission of Research Ethics Board Protocols
Ethics protocols that involve ‘more than minimal risk’ must be reviewed by the full UPEI Research Ethics Board. The next deadline for submitting these protocols is Friday October 2 2015. They will be reviewed at the October meeting.  Protocols involving ‘more than minimal risk’ that are received after October 2 will be reviewed at the November meeting. 
 
Other ethics protocol submissions, including new applications that do not involve ‘more than minimal risk’, renewals, and amendments may be submitted at any time. They will be sent for delegated review as soon as all necessary forms are received. 
 
Please ensure that you download and use the current forms from http://www.upei.ca/research/forms. Use Adobe Reader to complete forms.
 
Submit the following:
  • one hard copy of the signed application form and associated documents to Joy Knight at the Office of Research Services, 200 Kelley Memorial Building and

The next deadline for submitting Biosafety Protocols including new applications, renewals and/or amendments is Friday September 25 2015. These protocols will be reviewed at the October meeting. Please ensure that you download and use the current forms from http://www.upei.ca/research/forms. Use Adobe Reader to complete the forms.
 
Submit the following:
·         one hard copy of the application form with signatures and associated documents to Joy Knight at the Office of Research Services, 200 Kelley Memorial Building and
·         one e-copy of all documents to reb@upei.ca

Animal Care Protocol Submission Deadline - October 2nd

The deadline for Animal Care Protocol Submissions -- new, renewal, or amendment -- is Friday, October 2nd for the October meeting. 

Ensure you always…

Both the signed hard copy and electronic protocol submission must be submitted by the deadline date.

  • Submit one copy of original protocol with signature to AVC - North Annex, Biomedical Sciences Dept., Rm 2302
  • Submit an electronic copy to animalcare@upei.ca

Those protocols received after the deadline will be reviewed the following month.

The Committee requires at least one month for processing applications.

Island Help Line
On September 10, 2015 there was a re-launch of the Island Help Line, through the Canadian Mental Health Association, PEI division - 1800-218-2885 (as it was National Suicide Prevention Day).  This is a free service open to ALL people on PEI, in French and English.  Here is their website www.theislandhelpline.com - please take a look at it and encourage all people to use it.

UPEI Personal Training Grants for UPEI Employees - 16 grants left

The Healthy Campus Committee is pleased to offer $100 subsidy grants for current UPEI Employees (student staff not eligible for grant) for this academic year. We have a total of 16 grants left. The grant can be used towards the cost of either the Healthy U Club or Small Group Training Programs. To apply please fill out an application form and return to Angela Marchbank. Employees who have received the subsidy in previous years can apply again.  https://www.upei.ca/ar/wellness

a) Healthy U Club - An eight-week program involves two training sessions per week, one weigh-in and healthy eating meeting per week.  Fee:  $169 Sports Centre members and $209 for non-members.   For those receiving the grant the cost will be $69 or $109 plus hst.

Weekly weigh in, meal plan, log book and healthy eating discussion/presentation with Simply For Life consultant: Mondays 5:00 pm – 5:45 pm (Start Date: September 28)
Training sessions: Tuesdays and Thursdays 5:00 pm – 5:45 pm
Trainer:  Lyndsey Paynter (Start Date: September 29)

b) Small Group Training – An eight-week, two times per week small group of seven working with a certified personal trainer. Fee: $135 + taxes per person.  Cost for those receiving the grant will be $35 plus hst.

Nature-Inspired Writing Workshop with UPEI’s Deirdre Kessler
Macphail Homestead, 271 Macphail Park Road, Orwell
 
Saturday, September 12, 2015, 2:00 to 5:30 pm                        
 
Explore nature-based writing in the beautiful setting of the Macphail Homestead. See how poetry, memoir, dramatic monologue, and fiction begin with a sense of place and with close observation of the natural world. 
 
During this 3.5-hour workshop, participants will explore nature and their response to it as they write short pieces in a series of timed exercises developed by a skilled teacher. Supplies needed: notebook, pencil or pen.
 
People of all ages and all levels of writing experience are welcome. Register online or on the day of the workshop. The workshop fee is $40. Students and seniors pay $30.
 
Come for the workshop and stay for a light supper and free public reading by Deirdre Kessler, sponsored by the Writers’ Union of Canada, the Canada Council for the Arts, and the Macphail Homestead.

Deirdre Kessler is a poet and author of 15 books for young people and a dozen books of nonfiction for adults. Recently published are a memoir, Mother Country, published by Oberon Press (Dec. 2014) and Born! A foal, five kittens, and Confederation, a children’s book illustrated by Brenda Jones set in Charlottetown in 1864, which received a 2015 P.E.I. Museum & Heritage Foundation writing award and a 2015 City of Charlottetown Heritage Award. Deirdre teaches creative writing, children’s literature, and the course on L.M. Montgomery with UPEI’s Department of English. She is a recipient of a UPEI Award for Teaching Excellence. 
Chris Benjamin, author of Indian School Road, to read at UPEI
Chris Benjamin is a well-known fiction and features writer. His latest book, Indian School Road: Legacies of the Shubenacadie Indian Residential School, won the 2013 Dave Greber Freelance Book Award.
 
On Friday, September 18, Chris Benjamin will be sharing his new book on campus at UPEI during a brown bag lunch to be held in the Main Faculty Lounge from 12:00-1:00 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.
 
The event takes place soon after the publication of the Summary Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. In an interview with the CBC’s Peter Mansbridge on June 1, Justice Murray Sinclair stated, “Education is the key to reconciliation.”  It is in this spirit that the UPEI community and members of the public are gathering together with Chris Benjamin to discuss Legacies of the Shubenacadie Indian Residential School.
 
The Faculty of Education and the UPEI Aboriginal Students' Association are organizing the event.
UPEI Health Centre

Please be advised that the University of Prince Edward Island Student Health Centre, located in the Student Affairs office in the WA Murphy Student Centre, will be opening this year on October 19.

Until October 19, Dr David Reid will be seeing students, by appointment, at his clinic in Sherwood, 15 Brackley Point Road, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Please see this link for a map of the exact location. When the Health Centre opens on campus, Dr Reid will continue to see students Wednesday and Thursday mornings.
