French

The French program is seen as a natural progression of the provincial elementary and high school French curriculum. Its aim is the intensification and deepening of acquired knowledge and skills. The program consists of immersion in general cultural subject areas and the analysis of specific literary topics. The study of French, French-Canadian, and Acadian cultures provides a well-rounded program leading to a BA with a major in French. Our program may pave the way to graduate school and/or education programs, or simply a complement one's university study (no major, no minor). We receive three different kinds of clients, and the courses offered to these types of incoming students are grouped as Beginners, Intermediates, and Advanced. (Placement tests are administered through this website or on a paper version administered in the Department office to ensure that students are registered in courses according to their abilities.)

ALL INCOMING STUDENTS MUST TAKE THE FRENCH PLACEMENT TEST: The results of the Placement Test will ultimately determine the course in which the student will enroll, regardless of background. However, the following are typical placements based on academic background.

  1. The student who has little or no French will usually take: French 101-102.
  2. The student who has had core French in high school: French 121-122.
  3. The student who is fluent in French through high school Immersion programs or through residence or family: French 221-222.
