  • Post harvest fisheries consultant for the Canada-South Pacific Ocean Development Program. To perform a needs assessment and three year project plan for fisheries post-harvest development in the Pacific region. Employed by the Marine Studies Centre, USP, and working with Tony Chamberlain. This job involved extensive regional travel to interview fishing families, fish traders, medical personnel and staff in government departments, academic institutions and NGO’s.

1996-98

  • Marine resources management consultant and CUSO Co-operant (April 1996- December 1998) in Ambon Indonesia. Working with Hualopu Foundation, Rumsram Foundation (Indonesian NGOs working on marine issues) and the Environmental Studies Centre (PSL) and the Faculty of Fisheries of Pattimura University.
  • May 1996-November 1998: Advisor to Hualopu Foundation for funding proposals, project planning, public education resource materials, international networking.
  • June 1996 - November 1998: Program advisor and trainer for project planning, marine survey and monitoring and participatory research in support of CBCRM. Team leader for biological monitoring; Community workshop facilitator (monitoring methods, coral reef ecology, and marine plant identification and use).
  • July 1997 - November 1998: Project Co-leader for Fisheries Co-management Project, Indonesian section (ICLARM, Pattimura University and Hualopu Foundation). Topic: status and impact of traditional marine resource management institutions in Maluku, including the assessment of fisheries production and marketing and government-level management at the provincial and regional levels. Tasks: project planning and coordination, survey design, interviewing, data analysis and reporting. Publications currently in progress.
  • September 1997 - March 1998: Project supervisor, study of potential for marine plant cultivation (Eucheuma spp.) on the island of Nusi, Irian Jaya, Indonesia (Faculty of Fisheries, Pattimura University). Tasks: planning, experimental design, assessment of seaweed flora, interviewing women and fishermen, data analysis and reporting.
  • August 1997 - November 1998: Research associate in marine botany (Faculty of Fisheries, Pattimura University). Tasks: Collection and identification of seaweed flora in Maluku and Biak; development of marine plant herbarium.
  • December 1997 - February 1998: Organiser, study tour to the Philippines on the Local Government Act and recent fisheries policy changes (Hualopu Foundation).
