The Atlantic Veterinary College requires a full-time senior technologist in Central Services. Central Services is a containment level two (CL2) laboratory providing essential services to AVC and external clients within the Atlantic region. Services include preparation of bacteriological media, sterilization services, decontamination of biohazardous waste, and general laboratory support. This position oversees the daily operation of the Central Services laboratory and has significant involvement on university committees related to laboratory safety.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Consult with Central Services clients to address individual service support needs
  • Operational support for Central Services staff, including coordination, scheduling, training and technical assistance
  • Organization of service logistics, writing and maintaining standard operating procedures (SOPs) and managing inventory
  • Monitor quality control procedures including microbial culture
  • Manage expenditure and revenue budgets, reviewing procedures and prices, invoicing and ordering supplies
  • Preparation of media and reagents
  • Delivery of liquid nitrogen to cryogenic storage dewars at AVC
  • Maintenance of biosafety documentation requirements for Central Services laboratory and staff
  • Responsible for equipment maintenance and training of new users of shared equipment
  • Coordination and oversight of AVC Chemical Inventory
  • Responsible for disposal of hazardous chemical waste and maintenance of the AVC hazardous chemical waste warehouse
  • Assist in training of staff and students in biohazardous and lab waste management procedures
  • As Ex officio member of the UPEI Institutional Biosafety Committee, participation in evaluation of biosafety permit applications and consultation with applicants regarding biowaste protocols
  • Co-Chair of the AVC Health & Safety Working Group, reporting to the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee
  • Coordinate institutional (AVC) annual health and safety inspections

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Science in a relevant discipline
  • 3-5 years’ experience in biological research and/or diagnostic laboratory
  • Completion of Master of Science or Medical Laboratory Technologist programs would be an asset
  • Computer literacy in word processing, spreadsheet programs and web searches are essential
  • Thorough knowledge of safe handling and disposal of chemicals and biohazardous materials
  • Experience with preparation of chemical reagents microbiological media, managing a Containment Level 2 laboratory, and managing budgets are assets
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated organizational, problem solving and time management abilities
  • Strong interpersonal skills are essential, along with ability to effectively work independently and collaboratively
