Audio Visual (AV) Technicians provide technical support to ensure that the educational technology products and components in UPEI’s classrooms are installed and maintained to the highest standards. They are responsible for the successful operation of classroom, meeting room, and computer lab audio visual related technology across all UPEI campus locations, and this specific position focuses primarily on the joint Faculty of Medicine program offered by UPEI and Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador (MUN). 
 
On a daily basis, this position proactively prepares the bi-directional didactic teaching spaces for faculty and students, monitors classroom activities and technology performance during lectures, and addresses high priority AV technology support incidents. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensuring a flawlessly executed teaching and learning environment through accurate and timely setup, operation, and maintenance of audiovisual equipment and software including but not limited to control and switching systems, projectors and screens, digital signage, microphones & amplifiers, video conferencing systems, and lecture capture solutions
  • Working collaboratively with the MUN AV Team to troubleshoot interconnectivity issues and deploy contingency options to minimize service interruption between the two institutions
  • Handling equipment and software challenges and changes in a timely and professional manner
  • Striving to exceed the expectations and needs of internal and external clients while fostering long-term relationships
  • Maintaining a positive relationship with all clients through effective communication
  • Meeting with faculty and staff prior to the commencement of events to ensure that their needs are met, and the equipment setup is working properly
  • Understanding ITSS processes, following operational procedures, and completing incident reporting and procedural documentation accurately
  • Participating in the procurement, management, and reconciliation of IT equipment inventory
  • Completing other duties on short or limited notice due to IT emergencies

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience 

  • Post-secondary degree or a two-year College diploma in Computer Science or related field, and two years’ work experience in an audio-visual support role, or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience is required 
  • Certifications such as CTS, Crestron, Extron, Polycom, Biamp, QSC, etc. are considered an asset
  • Demonstrated experience with implementing and operating audio-visual technologies in a large scale and complex environment
  • Demonstrated professional knowledge of video and audio cabling formats (e.g., HDBaseT, HDMI, DVI, SDI, VGA, etc.), computer network technologies and topology
  • Experience working at a post-secondary educational institution would be considered an asset    
  • A valid driver’s license is required for team members 

Skills 

  • Basic troubleshooting knowledge of current Microsoft Windows and Apple IOS operating systems
  • Excellent working knowledge of various AV systems and technologies
  • Implementation of large-scale integrated audio-visual systems and services 
  • In-depth knowledge of local area network equipment and TCP/IP protocols 
  • Installation, configuration, and use of microcomputer software including Microsoft Office, internet browsers and other common applications 
  • Installation, configuration, and use of computer hardware and peripherals 
  • Excellent change control practices with particular attention to detail
  • Ability to define and write technical recommendations and documentation
  • Time management and organizational skills
  • Must be service oriented
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development 

Work Conditions 

  • Medium physical demands, typical of a position operating within an office environment working with technical infrastructure related equipment; periods of sitting or standing and concentrated use of visual senses
  • Intermittent work outside the normal operating hours of the Department may be required
  • Some exposure to disagreeable conditions typical of a position exposed to stress and pressure associated with technology related issues
