The Department of Biology of the University of Prince Edward Island is seeking a Laboratory Coordinator to develop instructional content as well as manage and instruct laboratory periods for departmental service courses for the Health Sciences. These may include: Biology 1210 Human Anatomy, Biology 2260 Human Anatomy and Histology, Biology 1220 Human Physiology, and Biology 1060 – Introductory Microbiology for Health Sciences.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design original educational materials to meet the instructional needs of the course(s)
  • Plan, develop, and establish guidelines and procedures for instructional, technical, supervisory and space components for each lab course
  • Use a variety of modalities during instruction (discussion, group work, mini-lectures, experiential learning activities, and active learning) to support student engagement.
  • Use a variety of means of both formative and summative evaluation to support student abilities (cooperative learning, reports, and teamwork)
  • Evaluate and select equipment and software for purchase. Order lab consumables, schedule use of shared equipment, and maintenance of instruments. Design updates to physical lab space and submit work orders
  • Develop assessments, rubrics, exemplars, assignments, quizzes, and exams for Instructors and Teaching Assistants. The coordinator is responsible for all aspects of laboratory assessments
  • Interview, hire, and supervise staff for multiple lab sections. This includes managing and finding replacement staff when needed. Review work of staff to ensure grading is correct, recorded and combined with lecture grades to create the final student grade
  • Consult with and advise UPEI Student Services concerning students with academic/attendance issues in the lab. Consult with UPEI Accessibility Services to adapt testing/curriculum to students with accommodations. Analyze outward signs of problems that students may have that inhibit their achievement and take appropriate action. Refer students to appropriate support services to identify difficulties that appear to be keeping the student from a high level of achievement
  • Other lab-related duties as assigned by the course instructors or Chair of the Department

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.Sc. in Biology, with a strong background in anatomy, physiology, and microbiology with a minimum of 3 years related work experience
  • B.Ed. or M.Sc. would be a definite asset
  • Excellent scientific communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience instructing biology laboratory periods
