The Veterinary Teaching Hospital is seeking an Animal Health Technician to provide full-time technical support for the Theriogenology Service primarily and the Large Animal Hospital, for a maternity leave term.  This position will provide nursing care to inpatients and outpatients, with the flexibility and initiative to float to other areas of the teaching hospital to perform other veterinary technician duties in support of hospital operations

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Undertake technical duties and responsibilities as part of the large animal technician teams across various primary and specialty services
  • Support student learning. Instruct and supervise veterinary and technical students on medical procedures such as venipuncture, injections, iv catheter placement, etc.
  • Stocking and maintaining supplies in Therio lab, ambulatory vehicles, and the LA Hospital, including reconciliation of Cubex inventory cabinets with patient prescriptions
  • Maintaining a high standard of cleanliness and biosecurity standards and other related technician duties as assigned
  • Assisting Therio veterinarians by providing proper restraint and handling of cattle and horses (including stallion handling), which can be physically demanding
  • Assist in taking laboratory samples, analyzing semen, assisting with semen freezing, and other sample handling and processing
  • Monitoring, assisting with and completing treatments and procedures for inpatients and outpatients
  • Assist with diagnostic workups, including various sample collections, radiographs, endoscopy, and anything else identified by the attending clinician(s)
  • Ambulatory duties include assisting on-farm with all aspects of the equine breeding season, and bovine reproductive medicine
  • Perform necessary nursing skills for the various levels of care required (including triage of emergency presentations, animal handling, restraint, and basic husbandry) and assisting with diagnostic procedures
  • Monitoring and reporting to the clinician any findings or abnormalities with the patient in relation to the treatment and/or status of their care and well-being
  • Assist in the maintenance of complete and accurate patient medical records and billing and working with clinicians and client services staff to ensure that patient bills are completed and paid prior to patient discharge
  • Support veterinary students, technician students, and junior veterinarians participating in post-graduate programs with confidence and compassion
  • Provide clinical support to other areas of the Large Animal Hospital at various times of the year
  • Working with technicians and clinicians in the large animal hospital to anticipate, organize, and prioritize cases that require technical support throughout the day
  • Support New Brunswick Ambulatory Equine Service, which will include travel and may include overnight stay
  • Support client services staff in ensuring an excellent client experience including answering client inquiries, taking payments, and client communication
  • Work schedule includes irregular hours and may include some evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • On-call shifts in the Large Animal Hospital are a requirement
  • Other related duties as assigned
  • Maintain collegial and professional interactions and communication with colleagues, students and clients at all times
  • Maintain safe, respectful, professional and ethical conduct, handling and interactions with patients and during patient care as befitting a veterinary teaching hospital environment and in accordance with veterinary regulatory bodies

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be a graduate of a recognized Animal Health Technician program from a recognized facility
  • RVT designation is required
  • 3 plus years of experience working in a clinical setting with large animals, and must have current experience handling and working with horses, cattle, and other species as required
  • Preference given to individuals with experience in theriogenology
  • Demonstrated ability to perform necessary nursing skills for the various levels of care required with large animals including venipuncture, catheter placement, patient monitoring, patient preparation for large animal surgical/medical procedures, technical assistance with large animal surgical/medical procedures
  • Must have positive and willing attitude and able to provide excellence in client services (will have primary client contact)
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated reliability and self-motivation
  • Demonstrated organizational skills in multi-tasking, time-management, and adaptability
  • Demonstrated ability to work well on a team
  • Strong computer skills with demonstrated ability in Windows and iOS Operating Systems
  • Previous experience with computerized medical records is required, with preference to applicants with knowledge of RxWorks and SmartFlow
