The Robertson Library is seeking a qualified library technician to fill a full-time permanent position in the Access Services Unit. You will be the first point of contact for many library users, providing students, staff, faculty, and the general public exceptional service. In addition, you will support the Library’s Reserves service, help plan and deliver outreach activities, and be engaged in other library-related projects. The successful candidate would be expected to demonstrate judgment, flexibility, and initiative, to implement policies and procedures set by the Library, and to work cooperatively with others to support the goals of the Library.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the University Librarian, the tasks include, but are not limited to, the following:

Access Services duties

  • Manage and be the point of contact for the Library’s Reserves service including creating, updating, and managing the view of Reserves and associated links in Moodle. Create and maintain Reserves documentation. Provide Reserves training for new staff as required.
  • Work scheduled shifts on the Library’s Service Desk which will require some evening and/or weekend shifts (approximately 12-14 hours weekly)
  • Assist library users in locating and using library materials, services, and technology (eg. copiers, printers, scanners, common software applications)
  • Provide information/reference service in-person, by telephone, and online via the Library’s virtual chat service.
  • Conduct tours.
  • Help train and supervise student assistants and update Service Desk documentation as needed.

Outreach duties

  • Collaborate on planning and implementing outreach activities
  • Connect with departments and groups on campus to develop/host events
  • Create promotional materials for outreach activities including print and digital products
  • Record metrics, collect feedback, and provide summary reporting

Other

  • As needed, provide backup for other activities in the Unit and Library
    • Examples include Interlibrary Loan, Digitization, etc.
  • With the Health Sciences and Scholarly Communications Librarian provide user support for the Library’s Pressbook platform
  • Other duties as assigned

Responsibilities and schedule may shift as Library requirements change.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Library Technician Diploma or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience
  • At least two years’ experience in an automated library environment
  • Demonstrated strong customer service orientation
  • Effective technology skills including proficiency with MS Office/Google Workspace applications
  • Event planning or related experience
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others

Assets:

  • Work experience in a university library
  • An open attitude towards learning new skills and new technology
  • Experience using web editing tools and/or web content management systems
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility
  • Familiarity with Indigenous ways of knowing
  • Ability to perform bending/lifting tasks, and to safely handle/shelve heavy items
