UPEI requires an experienced Technical Lead to assist management with the day-to-day supervision and technical leadership of our Microsoft 365 (M365) implementation and adoption project. The Technical Lead is also relied upon to lead the technical aspects of planning and implementing of M365 to maximize the benefit of our IT investments.    

This position provides technical oversight and expert guidance on enterprise architecture for its M365 environment and applications (SharePoint, Teams, OneDrive, Teams telephony, etc.) to the project and operations teams. This includes creating and implementing policies, procedures and guidelines that align with UPEI ITSS strategic objectives, and best practices related to knowledge and information management. In this multi-faceted lead role, the Technical Lead will also have a strong focus on privacy, compliance, security, and client support. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

In tandem with ITSS Project Management, the Technical Lead is responsible for: 

  • Assist Project Management with delegation and oversight of project related tasks
  • Play a leading role in technical requirements gathering, architectural design and implementation of M365 enterprise system at UPEI
  • Take the initiative to improve technical processes/procedures, recommend operational adoption approaches for the new enterprise suite, and assist/coach team members
  • Act as lead hand to implement new M365 related technologies, with minimal direction from Project Management (i.e., autonomously taking the initiative to problem solve, troubleshoot issues and supervise/delegate tasks to team members)
  • Assist Project Management with staff scheduling to ensure operational integrity of M365 for UPEI 
  • Translate high level technical objectives into project level options for review with ITSS management and project management. This may require consultation with vendors, other educational institutions, UPEI stakeholders etc.  The result being the technical details required to proceed to the RFP phase of the M365 project
  • Research and identify possible technical solutions to meet identified requirements from various campus stakeholders  
  • Evaluate, test, and recommend best solution(s)
  • Where necessary, assist in the integration of M365 with existing systems/solutions
  • Implement chosen M365 solutions, developing and documenting them to the point where they are incorporated into daily administration and maintenance activities
  • Ensure newly developed systems are being accessed and used correctly by staff/faculty/students through system monitoring 
  • Install and/or assist with new M365 applications and network devices, including a new VOIP telephony system 
  • Monitor system and network performance, and adjust configuration as necessary to ensure performance, functionality, licensing, and security needs are maintained
  • Diagnose and correct problems identified by monitoring systems, clients, or co-workers
  • Play an active role on the ITSS team by exchanging information, ideas, and suggestions with others in the department
  • Provide technical support for the broader University community
  • Provide consulting services and recommendations on a range of M365 related services including, but not limited to, needs assessments, system upgrades, software licensing and provisioning, integration with departmental software systems
  • Consult with regional and national representatives of IT member organizations 
  • Assist with security operations
  • Assist Project Management and ITSS operational management with ongoing process improvements

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post secondary degree in the field of computer science, science, management information systems, or business administration and 7 years related work experience or a suitable combination of both
  • Seven years’ experience supporting enterprise IT solutions/networks in a large-scale environment would be considered an asset. At least 4 years supporting Microsoft/M365 solution
  • Proficient in M365 (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams, OneDrive, Forms, Flow, Power BI, Power Platform, Dynamics), Microsoft certification (e.g., Microsoft 365 Certified: Administrator Expert) an asset  
  • Experienced working in a Cloud-based environment
  • Strong understanding of enterprise architecture principles in M365, including architecture frameworks and governance models
  • Knowledge of privacy and security best practices and related technologies, including data protection, encryption, access control, data classification, and data retention 
  • Understanding of Azure Active Directory
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills 
  • Excellent listening and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to conduct research into systems issues and products as required
  • Strong documentation skills
  • Proven analytical and creative problem-solving abilities 
  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure, fast paced environment
  • A professional IT certification (e.g., MCSE/CCNE) and/or certification in project management (CAPM/PMP) would be considered an asset
  • A strong commitment to excellent customer service is a fundamental requirement for this position
