Do you want to join a dynamic team practicing and teaching the highest standards of Veterinary Medicine?  Do you want to work in an environment supporting primary care clinicians and veterinary specialist experts across a small animal caseload?  Do you want to be part of training and shaping the next generation of veterinarians?  If so, we’d love to have you join us!  The Veterinary Teaching Hospital is seeking an Animal Care Attendant to join in a full-time, term position within the Small Animal Hospital to assist the client services representatives, technical staff and clinician teams in support of patient care and hospital operations.

This position will have a weekday schedule that may occasionally include covering weekends, holidays and UPEI closures. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Small Animal – Animal Care Attendant duties:

  • Clean and disinfect equipment and animal holding areas to the highest standard following infection control guidelines
  • Coordinate and process online pet food client sales and maintain pet food inventory for hospital use, including ordering and receipt of pet food inventory for hospital inpatients and client food orders
  • Facilitate adequate stock levels for hospital pet food and retail
  • Assist with monitoring and restocking hospital supplies
  • Support the daily care and husbandry of hospitalized patients within referral, primary care and emergency hospital settings
  • Follow specialized feeding instructions for patients
  • Provide assistance with the safe handling and restraint of patients
  • Provide assistance to veterinary technicians and clinicians for routine and emergent examinations, diagnostic procedures, treatments and patient care
  • Work as required with specialized equipment and maintain the highest standard of cleanliness
  • Interact with and facilitate communication between clients, students and hospital staff

General duties:

  • Maintain collegial and professional interactions and communication with colleagues and clients at all times, including respecting client/patient confidentiality
  • Must be willing to be assigned in an on-call schedule that may be required for hospital operations
  • Maintain safe, respectful, professional and ethical conduct, handling and interactions with patients as befitting a veterinary teaching hospital environment
  • Participate as assigned in a schedule as required for hospital operations that may include some work during nights/weekends/holidays/university closures

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A graduate of Grade 12
  • 1.5 years’ experience in the safe handling and restraint of small animals in a clinical setting preferred, and experience in a referral/teaching hospital would be considered an asset
  • Experience ordering and receiving inventory in a veterinary clinical setting preferred
  • Certification in low-stress animal handling would be considered an asset
  • Must have demonstrated abilities in use of computer systems and spreadsheets
  • Must have ability to lift weights up to 25kg
  • Must be self-motivated and reliable
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to work independently, but also as part of a team
  • Must be prepared to work some weekends, some statutory holidays and UPEI closures
