The Robertson Library is seeking a qualified library technician to fill a full-time permanent position in the Cataloguing and Metadata unit and provide services to students, staff, and faculty of the University and to the general public at the Service Desk. The successful candidate would be expected to demonstrate judgment, flexibility, and initiative, to implement policies and procedures set by the Library, and to work cooperatively with Library staff.     

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the Metadata Librarian, the tasks include, but are not limited to, the following:

Cataloguing and Metadata duties:

  • Perform copy cataloguing of bibliographic and authority records in various formats including some classification and cuttering, and the creation and maintenance of associated item records
  • Ensure records and metadata follow Library of Congress classification, MARC21 encoding, and RDA (Resource Description and Access) descriptive cataloguing standards, local cataloguing rules, and best practices
  • Process physical materials (spine labels, barcodes, etc.) in preparation for circulation
  • Update and enhance existing bibliographic records to improve access, correct errors, etc.
  • Maintain and update item records as part of the cataloguing workflow
  • Train and provide instructive guidance to part-time staff and student assistants as needed to assist with cataloguing-focused projects
  • Maintain local documentation related to cataloguing and item record functions and processes within the ILS environment
  • Create, import, and/or enhance metadata records for library-managed digital repositories
  • Collaborate on cataloguing projects with library colleagues and external counterparts
  • Track cataloguing supplies and maintain inventory in coordination with the administrative assistant
  • Maintain an awareness of new cataloguing trends and developments in order to improve service and create efficiencies within the department

Service Desk duties:

  • Work regular shifts on the Library’s Service Desk – may require some evening and/or weekend shift
  • Assist library users in locating and using library materials, services, and technology (eg. copiers, printers, scanners, common software applications)
  • Provide information/reference service in-person, by telephone, and online via the Library’s virtual chat service
  • Circulate library resources, laptops, etc.
  • Help supervise student assistants
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Library Technician Diploma or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience
  • At least two years’ experience in an automated library environment
  • Experience cataloguing physical and digital resources using appropriate cataloguing rules (eg. MARC21, RDA, AACR2)
  • Demonstrated strong customer service orientation
  • Effective technology skills including proficiency with MS Office/Google Workspace applications
  • Attention to detail

Assets:

  • Work experience in a university library
  • Experience copy cataloguing using the Z39.50 protocol
  • Experience using Evergreen ILS for library cataloguing
  • Experience with other metadata standards such as Dublin Core and MODS
  • Experience using MarcEdit or similar cataloguing utilities
  • Experience using Redmine or similar project management applications
  • Experience using the Alpha-Numeric System for Classification of Recordings (ANSCR)
