The Department of Pathology & Microbiology is seeking applications from interested candidates for casual work within multiple fish health projects. The successful candidate(s) will work under the direction of the Principal Investigators, Drs. Mark Fast and/or Laura Bourque.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Fish feeding, maintenance, and necropsy
  • Aquaculture site visit and lice collection and transport
  • Pipetting
  • RNA and DNA extractions
  • PCR and qPCR
  • Tissue trimming
  • Water sampling and filtration from local rivers

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to work flexible hours
    • Hours of work may be outside normal day working hours (afternoon shift), and/or on weekends.
    • Hours of work will vary depending on staff availability and the demands of the project.
  • DVM student or undergraduate student in biology preferred.
  • Demonstrated interest in basic laboratory techniques.
  • Ability to be trained in basic laboratory techniques, such as pipetting.
  • Willingness to be trained and to follow established laboratory safety procedures under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and/or Lab manager.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail as the work is sensitive to error.
  • The ability to perform highly repetitive simple procedures.

Priority will be given to University of Prince Edward Island students in accordance with Recruitment, Selection, Hiring and Employment Policies and the Procedures manual.
