The Robertson Library is seeking qualified applicants for a student assistant position for the Fall 2023 semester (with possibility of extension for the Winter-Spring 2024 semester).

The successful candidate will report to the University Librarian, and work in consultation with the University Archivist & Special Collections Librarian and the Library’s Community History Librarian to make selected recordings in the University Archives’ holdings – currently stored only in analog format (audio cassette) – available online.

The University Archives holds several hundred audio cassette recordings, made from ca. 1971 through the early 1990s, of talks from UPEI faculty and visiting lecturers, panel discussions, and speeches at campus events (e.g. building openings): many of these recordings contain unique audio documentation of events or issues of importance for the institutional history of UPEI or for the Island more generally.  The obsolescence of the audio cassette format, however, combined with the limited metadata provided for many of the recordings, currently presents a significant barrier to access for this content, and this project will improve the discoverability and accessibility of the University Archives audio cassettes by making selected titles from this collection available via the library’s online islandvoices.ca platform.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • make high-quality digital copies of audio cassette recordings
  • edit the digital audio files
  • make notes on the content of the audio recordings and on the labeling / annotations of the audio cassettes on which these recordings were originally captured
  • undertake supplemental research, as required, to provide further information on the historical context of the recordings
  • ensure that digitized files and accompanying information (metadata) meet quality standards
  • load content into the library’s islandarchives.ca platform
  • track work in a project management software
  • assist with other tasks in the Digitization Lab, University Archives, and Special Collections as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Comfortable with MacOS and Windows operating systems and file management (e.g. moving, copying, and organizing files)
  • Experience with digital audio editing software (e.g. Audacity)
  • Experience with Google Apps (e.g. Google Sheets, Docs, Drive, etc..)
  • Demonstrated ability to perform repetitive work while ensuring careful attention to detail
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to take direction
  • Ability to work independently

ASSETS:

  • Experience using analog audio media formats, specifically audio cassettes
  • Demonstrated experience with library and archival research in the field of PEI history (and / or UPEI institutional history)
  • Experience with a web-based content management system such as Drupal
  • Knowledge of the Islandora Digital Asset Management System

Priority will be given to University of Prince Edward Island students in accordance with Recruitment, Selection, Hiring and Employment Policies and the Procedures manual.
