Salary:

Senior Residence Life Advisors (SRLAs) will receive reimbursement equivalent to the room rate they reside in, plus additional compensation for their after-hours work. Income tax rules do apply to the SRLA compensation.

Ancillary Services is looking for up to 6 Senior Residence Life Advisors for the 2024-25 academic year (September to April). SRLAs act as student leaders, advisors, peer-supporters, event planners, and educators to maintain residence community standards. SRLAs must work together with their fellow SRLAs, RLAs, Residence Operations Staff, Residence Life Management Leadership, Security, Maintenance, Food Services, and other university staff

Please note: SRLAs are required to attend training in late August and must remain in residence at least 48 hours (subject to change at the discretion of Residence Management) after the end of exams in April. They are required to return from the holiday break at least two days prior to the regular check-in for residence students. Additionally, you are applying for the position of SRLA and not for a position of SRLA within a certain building. The hiring committee extends offers based on suitability and staffing requirements. Also, there is often after-hours work required

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Residence Leadership 

  • SRLAs demonstrate leadership, maturity, dependability, and involvement in their residence community, as well as sensitivity and concern for other residents and fellow staff. They must be committed to their own personal growth, taking care to budget personal time for study, work, relaxation, and continuous learning
  • SRLAs as a positive role model at all times for all students, specifically with regards to academics, personal wellness, conduct and community behavior expectations
  • SRLAs develop relationships with residents to ensure approachability, resourcefulness, and to foster a cohesive community

Residence Safety  

  • SRLAs are to be on-duty and on-call in weekly rotation with the other SRLAs and respond to emergencies that occur within Residence
  • While on-duty and on-call, SRLAs must be under no influence of intoxicating substances for the whole duration of their scheduled period. During this time, SRLAs assist RLAs with rounds and desk duty when needed
  • During on-call rotations, SRLAs must be readily available throughout the day (excluding class and student requirements), and for duty hours (8pm - 8am) they must be on campus and at least within 10 minutes of the residence buildings
  • SRLAs aid in upholding safety by also being called upon to assist the RLAs through mediation processes and referrals as needed 

RLA Supervision, Support & Mentorship

  • SRLAs lead an RLA team, and also oversee the scheduling and management of their RLA teams. This includes being supportive of the RLA team and readily available to assist and talk through resident issues as they arise
  • SRLA are to consistently check-in with their RLAs and to maintain tracking the progress of the team and serve as a positive supporter of their work and successes
  • SRLAs help in the training, team building and maintenance of positive team dynamics for the RLAs
  • SRLAs work with the Residence Life Management Team to supervise the work of the RLAs and to make assessments and evaluations of the RLAs

Residence Operations  

  • Assist the Residence Life Management Team with residence programs and support
  • Assist with the Residence Social Media channels 
  • Assist with the Residence Office administrative tasks

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Full-time student status at UPEI
  • Has been a Residence Life Advisor for a minimum of one (1) full academic year at UPEI 
  • Satisfactory academic standing (minimum 65% average). Each applicant must submit a copy of his/her unofficial degree audit with the application package. (This information is kept in confidence by the Selection Committee)
  • Good rapport with fellow residence students, and the ability to serve as a positive role model 
  • Sound knowledge of the university, campus services, residence life program, and different student activities
