FAQs

Do screen savers save energy?
Screen savers save computer screens, not energy. Start-ups and shutdowns do not use any extra energy, nor are they hard on your computer components.  In fact, shutting computers down when you are finished using them actually reduces system wear - and saves energy.

Are block heaters useful?
Your vehicle’s oil does not freeze when the temperature dips below 0oC, but it does become thicker.  So, when you try to start a cold engine, it is as though the parts are moving through molasses. That means that your engine has to work harder, so it uses more fuel. Using a block heater warms the oil and engine coolant and makes your vehicle easier to start - and that can improve winter fuel economy by as much as 10%. But do not leave your block heater on overnight; your savings will disappear in a bigger electricity bill.  Use a timer to switch on the block heater two hours before you plan to drive.
