Each year on April 28 in Canada and over 100 countries, we mark the National Day of Mourning to remember those who have lost their lives or suffered injury or illness on the job or due to a work-related tragedy. It is also a day to collectively renew our commitment to improve health and safety in the workplace and prevent further injuries, illnesses, and deaths.

At UPEI, the Health, Safety, and Environment department promotes an internal responsibility system that expects all workplace parties to collaborate on identifying, assessing, and managing all workplace hazards and risks. UPEI Health, Safety, and Environment provides oversight and guidance to ensure compliance with occupational health and safety legislation on PEI.

Traditionally, support for the National Day of Mourning is shown by wearing black and yellow ribbons or stickers, lighting candles, and observing a moment of silence at 11:00 am. There are many ways we can show our support on the National Day of Mourning. Please consider:

  • displaying a Day of Mourning poster

  • wearing a Day of Mourning lapel sticker

  • observing a moment of silence

  • viewing a video on the Day of Mourning from the Canadian Centre on Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS)

  • attending the ceremony hosted by PEI Federation of Labour:
    Day of Mourning Ceremony
    7:00 pm on Sunday, April 28, 2024
St. Paul’s Hall, 101 Prince Street, Charlottetown

The University of Prince Edward Island will observe the National Day of Mourning by flying the flags near Kelley Memorial Building and at UPEI Alumni Canada Games Place at half-mast on April 28.

More information about the National Day of Mourning can be found on the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety website.
