She has been called "The First Public School Teacher in Canada". Marguerite Bourgeoys taught European and First Nations children together beginning in 1658 in Ville Marie. She died on January 12, 1700 and was made a saint by Pope John Paul II on October 31, 1982. Her spirit continues in the many schools across the country named Saint Marguerite Bouregoys, in teachers and in her sisters and associates in The Congregation of Notre Dame, Sister Sue's religious community.
