The UPEI Music Department Recital Series 2014-15 is pleased to present its first Student Showcase Recital featuring UPEI Music Majors in performance. The recital will feature performances on trombone, clarinet, voice, saxophone, and flute, and will include works by Weber, Hindemith, Massenet, Strauss, Osborne, Handel, and others. The recital will take place at the Kirk of St. James on Pownal Street, Charlottetown at 7:30 pm tonight, Tuesday, November 18. Admission is FREE and all are welcome to attend.

A UPEI PhD candidate in the Faculty of Education is seeking non-francophone parents of children in French schools to complete a short survey as part of a research project. The involvement of parents is known to be important for children’s education and social success. For this reason, this project seeks to explore the experience and involvement of non-francophone parents with children in French schools. Retired UPEI professor and past Dean of Science at UPEI (1997-2006), Dr. Roger Gordon, will launch his first book—a memoir entitled Starting to Frame—TONIGHT- Friday, November 14, 6:30pm at The Haviland Club in Charlottetown. Dr. Gordon published a large number of scientific articles on biological control of insects during his academic career at Simon Fraser University, Memorial University, and UPEI. At UPEI, he chaired a research project on developing healthful products from blueberries and rosehips. But, the book that he has penned is a marked departure from his prior scientific endeavors. Starting to Frame speaks to Dr. Gordon's upbringing in post-war Sheffield, UK, and gives the reader insight into many of the stigmas of that era, including marital infidelity, divorce, and mental illness. The past and present state of Island land use policy will be the subject of a public symposium to be held at UPEI’s MacKinnon Auditorium, Room 242, Don and Marion McDougall Hall, on Thursday, November 27 at 7:00 pm. The symposium will begin with presentations by two veteran observers of Island public life over the past 30 years, Jean-Paul Arsenault and Ian Petrie. Mr. Arsenault’s talk is entitled “Factors Affecting Land Use Decisions: What Were They Thinking?” and Mr. Petrie will address the topic “Why Farmers Fight Regulations.” Descriptions of their talks can be found at http://projects.upei.ca/iis/events/ Members of the public are cordially invited to attend. Money raised will go directly to the Movember campaign. The wet/dry event is semi-formal and tickets are $10 each. You will receive $250 in poker chips with your ticket purchase. For an extra $10, you can receive an additional $250 in poker chips; and for an extra $20, you can receive an additional $600 in poker chips. Prizes will be auctioned using your winnings at midnight. Patrons under the age of 19 must present a UPEI or Holland College ID. A Movember-themed photobooth will be on site to capture Movember memories!

Ethics protocols that involve ‘more than minimal risk’ must be reviewed by the full UPEI Research Ethics Board. However, the UPEI Research Ethics Board does not meet in December, so the next deadline for submitting these protocols is Friday January 2, 2015. They will be reviewed at the January meeting. Protocols involving ‘more than minimal risk’ that are received after January 2 will be reviewed at the February meeting. Other ethics protocol submissions, including new applications that do not involve ‘more than minimal risk’, renewals, and amendments may be submitted at any time.
