Ethics protocols involving more than minimum risk: The full UPEI Research Ethics Board must review ethics protocols that involve more than minimal risk. The next deadline for submitting these protocols is Friday, June 6, 2014. They will be reviewed at the June meeting. Protocols involving more than minimal risk that are received after June 6 will be reviewed in July. Ethics protocols that do not involve more than minimum risk: Other ethics submissions, including new applications, renewals, and amendments, that do not involve more than minimal risk, may be submitted at any time. They will be sent for delegated review as soon as all necessary forms are received. Please ensure that you download and use the current forms from http://research.upei.ca/forms. Join us for the launch of “Some weather we’re having! 2015 PEI Weather Trivia Calendar” written by Don Jardine and Dr. Adam Fenech and published by UPEI’s Climate Research Lab. The launch takes place from 7:00-9:00 pm, May 20 at the Carriage House Beaconsfield Historic House in Charlottetown. Prince Edward Island history comes to life in this first-ever PEI weather trivia calendar of 365 stories about Prince Edward Island weather and its impact on Islanders’ everyday life. This calendar brings stories from North Cape to East Point, West Point to Murray Head – and all points in-between over the past 150 years. The event is free but registration is required. The deadline for Animal Care Protocol Submissions — new, renewal, or amendments — is Friday, June 6 for the June meeting. Training is required to carry out the following responsibilities: By ground—A person who handles (see definition below), offers for transport, or transports dangerous goods must: (a) be adequately trained and hold a training certificate; or (b) perform those activities in the presence and under the direct supervision of a person who is adequately trained and who holds a training certificate in accordance with the regulations. Handling—is defined as: loading, unloading, or packing dangerous g​oods...for the purposes of, in the course of, or following transportation. Note: it has been clarified that you do not need to have training to unpack a dangerous good that has already been received by Shipping & Receiving. WHMIS training covers this aspect. By air—(IATA regulations): No person may offer or accept dangerous goods for air transport unless those goods are properly classified, documented, certified, packaged, marked, labeled, and in the condition for shipment required by the IATA regulations. Training is required to carry out these responsibilities. ​The tentative training dates are the weeks of May 26 or June 2. Important information will be provided on: - Safety Tips to allow you to stay in your home longer - How to avoid adverse drug events (the most common cause of hospitalization for Seniors) - Medication Management for optimal health and safety - Falls: Why we Fall and how to avoid it - Mobility Aids and adaptions to live with freedom, mobility, and Independence ​ The session will be held on Friday, May 16, 1:00-2:00pm in Kelley Memorial Building, Room 211​. The Master of Arts Island Studies program at UPEI is hosting a major international conference from July 4 - 9. The Reseau d’Excellence des Territoires Insulaires (RETI), brings together faculty, graduate students and Presidents from 26 international island-based universities. The deadline for submission of abstracts and the early-bird deadline for registration is May 31, 2014. This is a public forum event with presentations by Dr. Ryan O'Connor, Dr. Cathy Ryan, and UPEI's Dr. Michael van den Heuvel. The symposium will take place in the Alex H. MacKinnon Auditorium, room 242 of UPEI’s Don and Marion McDougall Hall – beginning at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, May 20. This event is open to the public and admission is free. Researchers at the University of Prince Edward Island are looking for volunteers to participate in one of two studies to evaluate the physiological effects of capsaicinoids—the active ingredient in chili peppers. Capsaicinoids are known for their ability to increase weight loss and cardiovascular health while decreasing appetite and pain. The project is looking for non-smoking, healthy male and female participants between the ages of 18 and 45. Participants will be given their test results, as well as $50.
