Join us for the launch of “Some weather we’re having! 2015 PEI Weather Trivia Calendar” written by Don Jardine and Dr. Adam Fenech and published by UPEI’s Climate Research Lab. The launch takes place from 7-9 pm, May 20 at the Carriage House Beaconsfield Historic House in Charlottetown. Prince Edward Island history comes to life in this first-ever PEI weather trivia calendar of 365 stories about Prince Edward Island weather and its impact on Islanders’ everyday life. This calendar brings stories from North Cape to East Point, West Point to Murray Head – and all points in-between over the past 150 years. Registration is required. Register at upei.ca/climate
Over the past several months, the search committee for the Vice-President Academic (President Alaa Abd-El-Aziz, Dr. James Sentance, Dr. Gordon MacDonald, Mr. Scott Harper, Ms. Elizabeth Maynard, Ms. Kathy Kielly, and Ms. Anastasia Smallwood) has received and considered expressions of interest and supporting documents from potential candidates for the position. A number of outstanding candidates proceeded to the interview process. As a result, two candidates have been selected by the committee to deliver public presentations to campus. Both presentations will be held in Lecture Theatre A of the Atlantic Veterinary College. Each 20-minute presentation will be followed by an opportunity for questions from the audience. Dr. Christian Lacroix will present on Thursday, May 22, 10:30 am to 11:45 am. The session will be moderated by Dr. Gordon MacDonald. Dr. Alexander (Sandy) MacDonald will present on Thursday, May 22, 1:00 pm to 2:15 pm. The session will be moderated by Dr. James Sentance. The campus community is invited and encouraged to participate. The future of the Island’s water supply will be the subject of an upcoming public symposium at the University of Prince Edward Island. In light of recent concern about increased pressure on our groundwater resources by urban, industrial, and agricultural use, this event is a timely one. The symposium will include presentation by Dr. Ryan O’Connor, Dr. Cathy Ryan, and UPEI’s Dr. Michael van den Heuvel, and will include a public forum. Island Water Futures: Assessing the Science will take place in the Alex H. MacKinnon Auditorium, Room 242 of UPEI’s McDougall Hall, beginning at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, May 20. The symposium is sponsored by the Institute of Island Studies in conjunction with UPEI Research Services. The event is free and is open to the public. Join us at an informal reception to celebrate Island Studies at the University of Prince Edward Island that will pay tribute to the work of the Institute of Island Studies and recognize the contributions of its past Director, Irene Novaczek.
Ethics protocols involving more than minimum risk: The full UPEI Research Ethics Board must review ethics protocols that involve more than minimal risk. The next deadline for submitting these protocols is Friday, June 6, 2014. They will be reviewed at the June meeting. Protocols involving more than minimal risk that are received after June 6 will be reviewed in July. Ethics protocols that do not involve more than minimum risk: Other ethics submissions, including new applications, renewals, and amendments, that do not involve more than minimal risk, may be submitted at any time. They will be sent for delegated review as soon as all necessary forms are received. Please ensure that you download and use the current forms from http://research.upei.ca/forms. Use Adobe Reader to complete forms. The deadline for Animal Care Protocol Submissions — new, renewal, or amendments — is Friday, June 6 for the June meeting. Ensure you always download the current forms from http://research.upei.ca/animal_care and use the most current Adobe Reader to complete forms. Only current forms will be accepted. Both the signed hard copy and electronic protocol submission must be submitted by the deadline date. ∙ Submit one copy of original protocol with signature to AVC - Annex, Biomedical Sciences Department, room 2302. ∙ Submit an electronic copy to animalcare@upei.ca Those protocols received after the deadline will be reviewed the following month. Training is required to carry out the following responsibilities: By ground—A person who handles (see definition below), offers for transport, or transports dangerous goods must: (a) be adequately trained and hold a training certificate; or (b) perform those activities in the presence and under the direct supervision of a person who is adequately trained and who holds a training certificate in accordance with the regulations. Handling—is defined as: loading, unloading, or packing dangerous g​oods...for the purposes of, in the course of, or following transportation. Note: it has been clarified that you do not need to have training to unpack a dangerous good that has already been received by Shipping & Receiving. WHMIS training covers this aspect. By air—(IATA regulations): No person may offer or accept dangerous goods for air transport unless those goods are properly classified, documented, certified, packaged, marked, labeled, and in the condition for shipment required by the IATA regulations. Training is required to carry out these responsibilities. ​The tentative training dates are the weeks of May 26 or June 2.
