There will be a UPEI biosafety training session on Thursday June 26, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, AVC, Room 286A. Topics to be covered include basic biosafety principles and how they are applied at the University of Prince Edward Island, as well as biosecurity training. Please note: only those who attended a training session after November, 2012 are currently considered to be “up to date” in their training requirements. If you wish to attend, you must pre-register by contacting Carol Heartz, Research Services and Graduate Studies, before June 20 by email (heartz@upei.ca) or by phone (x 0775). UPEI alumna and York University doctoral candidate Heather Barnick will give a public presentation of her fieldwork on Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games in Shanghai, "Digital Designs: Cultural Identity and China's Online Role Playing Game Industry," on Monday June 9 at 3:00 pm in Dalton Hall, Room 409. The presentation is sponsored by the Young Lives Research Lab and the Department of Sociology & Anthropology.
The Canadian Chamber of Commerce is pleased to offer university students across Canada the opportunity to win a $2,000 bursary. Students will want to familiarize themselves with the Partnership for Research Trade (PRT) and produce a brief video on the merits of supporting its objectives. The videos must be creative, original, and fun, no more than 3 to 5 minutes long. It should address one or more of the three objectives and promote support of the PRT. Participants are to email their videos to prt@chamber.ca where a Project Coordinator will post the video onto the YouTube channel. In addition to the $2,000 bursary, the winning video will be featured in the PRT communications campaign. The goal of this contest is not only to create more awareness among youth on the importance of Canada’s natural resource sectors, but also to further interest and engage our younger generation in one of Canada’s key policy and economic issue. In order to be eligible for the bursary, contestants must be full-time registered students of a Canadian University. In addition, students must "like" the Canadian Chamber of Commerce (CCC) on Facebook, follow CCC on Twitter, and subscribe to the CCC’s YouTube channel. Any printing jobs required before the closure date should be submitted with that timeframe in mind. Printing jobs required in August will be printed on a first-in first-out basis, in an as efficient and time sensitive manner as possible. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter. UPEI’s Lucy Maud Montgomery Institute (LMMI)’s 11th biennial conference—“L.M. Montgomery and War”—will take place June 25–29 in Charlottetown. The conference will include open discussions on war, conflict, the Canadian Home Front, gender roles, and more. Keynote speakers include distinguished historian Jonathan Vance; Montgomery scholar, LMMI founder, and former UPEI President, Elizabeth “Betsy” Epperly; and Canada Research Chair Irene Gammel. In addition to the full conference program, there will also be a public exhibition at the Confederation Centre of the Arts Public Library entitled “The Canadian Home Front: L.M. Montgomery’s Reflections on The First World War,” curated by Dr. Laura Robinson of the Royal Military College. “Maud of Leaskdale,” a fantastic one-woman play will also take place at the Carrefour Theatre in Charlottetown during the conference, and much more!
