Nature PEI and the Atlantic Veterinary College, UPEI, will co-present a public workshop called “Tick Talk: The threat of Lyme disease in PEI” on Thursday, September 25, at 7:00 pm in the AVC Lecture Theatre A. A serious illness that spreads to humans and pets from the bite of infected ticks, Lyme disease is on the rise in Canada. Dr. Vett Lloyd, Department of Biology, Mount Allison University, and Dr. Barb Horney, Department of Pathology and Microbiology, AVC, will talk about the symptoms of Lyme disease, how it is transmitted, treatments available, and prevention for you and your pets. The Atlantic Veterinary College at the University of Prince Edward Island will hold its 26th annual Open House on Saturday, September 27, from 10:00 am-2:00 pm. Organized and run by AVC students, AVC Open House is an opportunity for the public to go behind the scenes at a veterinary medical college. Visitors will see many demonstrations and exhibits, including a parade of dog breeds; clicker training with dogs; a painted cow and horse; and much more. Children can bring their favourite stuffed toys for a check-up and treatment at the always-popular Teddy Bear Clinic. And they can have their faces painted, get balloon animals, and learn how to gown up for surgery. Visitors are welcome to bring canned cat or dog food, or toys for the PEI Humane Society. AVC Open House is one of the largest, most successful open houses in Atlantic Canada. Everyone is welcome to attend!

The UPEI Department of Music is pleased to begin its 2014-15 Concert Series at Steel Recital Hall on Friday, September 12 at 7:30 pm with David Braid and the Maritime Brass Quintet performing Braid’s works for jazz piano and brass quintet and Gershwin's “Rhapsody in Blue.” Throughout this season, the Music Department will be celebrating its students, alumni, and PEI musicians returning home, by featuring them in fifteen of the seventeen concerts presented in the series. This first concert includes UPEI alumni Eric Mathis and Bob Nicholson as part of the brass quintet. Staff and faculty are invited to take part in the Shine Day Kick-off at the W.A. Murphy Student Centre from 8:30-9:30 am on Saturday, September 6. Discover what Shinerama is about and what UPEI is doing to help. If you aren't able to attend, you can show your support by donating to the cause! UPEI students will be going around campus on Monday, September 8 beginning at 1:00 pm collecting money in support of Shinerama. Please note the date has changed and donations will now be collected on Monday.

UPEI is pleased to announce a program that will enhance its student support services. Through a partnership with Shepell-FGI, UPEI will now offer a Student Support Program (SSP) for all students. This program is similar to the Employee and Family Assistance Program offered to UPEI staff and faculty. Students will have access to many different professionals 24/7, 365 days a year, including counsellors, nutritionists, lawyers, financial experts and others. Students can receive support on a variety of topics including relationships, childcare, landlord/tenant issues, and health and financial issues as well. These services are available in over 200 different languages. The program will be available September 1. Representatives from Shepell-FGI will also be on campus September 9 and 10 to provide information to students regarding the new program.
